LONG BEACH >> Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday compared recent actions by Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Ukraine to those implemented by Adolf Hitler in the late 1930s.
Putins desire to protect minority Russians in Ukraine is reminiscent of Hitlers actions to protect ethnic Germans outside Germany, she said.
Putin has been on a campaign to give Russian passports to anyone who has Russian connections, Clinton said.
The Russian leader has recently done so in the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, which, Clinton said, is similar to what happened in Nazi Germany in the late 1930s. Hitler resettled tens of thousands of ethnic Germans who were living in parts of Europe to Nazi Germany.
Clinton made her comments at a private event benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach.
Now if this sounds familiar, its what Hitler did back in the 30s, she said. All the Germans that were ... the ethnic Germans, the Germans by ancestry who were in places like Czechoslovakia and Romania and other places, Hitler kept saying theyre not being treated right. I must go and protect my people and thats whats gotten everybody so nervous.
Last week, Putin put Russian troops on the Ukrainian peninsula in Crimea, insisting that Russia has a right to protect its interests and Russian-speakers in Crimea and elsewhere in Ukraine. However, there has been no sign of ethnic Russians facing attacks in Crimea, where they make up about 60 percent of the population, or elsewhere in Ukraine. The decision followed a new government coming to power last week in Ukraine following months of pro-democracy protests against the now-fugitive president, Viktor Yanukovych, and his decision to turn Ukraine toward Russia instead of the European Union.
Putin is a man who believes his mission is to restore Russian greatness, Clinton said.
That includes reasserting control of what used to be countries under the former Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, she said.
When he looks at Ukraine, he sees a place that he believes is by its very nature part of Mother Russia.
If Ukraine and Russia are to reach any kind of compromise, negotiations may start in Crimea, Clinton said.
I think thats where the negotiations will start, she said.
Clinton, a possible Democratic presidential candidate in 2016, also noted that Secretary of State John Kerry is in Kiev while Russia has agreed to meet with NATO in Brussels.
So everybody is hoping that there will be a negotiation but a negotiation that respects Ukraine and doesnt ratify a reoccupation by Russia of Crimea, she said. So its a real nail-biter, right now, but nobody wants to up the rhetoric. Everybody wants to cool it in order to find a diplomatic solution and thats what we should be trying to do.
Clinton was in downtown Long Beach for a private event benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach.
She and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, are major supporters of the national organization, which recently announced a partnership with The Clinton Foundation to give nearly 4 million at-risk children in the U.S. more access to nutritious foods. Its a partnership that began with pilot programs throughout the U.S., including Los Angeles County.
Clinton arrived after 1 p.m. at the law offices of Kessal, Young & Logan, where she took pictures with some of the 250 people who attended the event, including Mayor Bob Foster and several city officials.
After talking about the importance of the Boys and Girls Clubs work with children, Clinton spent about 40 minutes answering questions that ranged from what her favorite Girl Scout cookie is its peanut butter to breaking barriers to her opinion on the Affordable Care Act.
On being a trailblazer for women, Clinton said she has been fortunate to have opportunities that were not available to her mother and grandmother.
Ive been lucky, but Ive also been up against the barriers and attitudes, she said. When I was coming up, there were scholarships I couldnt get, schools I couldnt go to.
While she sees an enormous sea change in opportunities for women, Clinton said their participation, particularly in Congress and in corporate boardrooms, is pretty abysmal.
Young women still today need mentoring and support and encouragement, and we need to do a better job in helping to deal with this difficult balance between work and family, she said.
Clinton mentioned her work on a project called No Ceilings, an effort to measure the progress women have made in the past 20 years. She said there needs to be a focus on helping women who are still deprived of education, health care and the right to vote and other issues.
Clinton also spoke about the federal gridlock, which she finds deeply disturbing.
Thats not how a great country should operate, she said.
On the issue of health care, Clinton said she was proud of what President Barack Obama has achieved in signing the Affordable Care Act, which she said is already making a difference in many peoples lives. She touted the acts emphasis on preventive care, which she advocated, the ability for adults to keep their children on health insurance until they are 26 and an insurers inability to discriminate against those with pre-existing medical conditions.
Theres just an enormous amount of good in this bill, she said, and I think a lot of the characterization of it has been somewhat distorted.
She acknowledged there are problems with the law that need to be addressed as things move forward, such as trying to keep costs down, ensuring that subsidies are sufficient and finding a way to pay for Medicaid.
My hope is that all of these negative depictions of it dont throw the baby out with the bath, she said.
But lets stay committed to the goal of quality affordable health care for every American because its the right goal and over the long run its a smart economic position as well, she said.
Crimea should never have belonged to Ukraine. Khrushchev only handed it over as a symbolic gesture, which really meant nothing, because it will still part of the Soviet Union.
LOL a regular ole blitzkrieg.
Hey Hillary...”Nazi” almost rhymes with “Benghazi” doesn’t it?
Keep hammering folks, never forget.
I wonder if she would compare Obama’s policies to Stalin’s.
That’s kinda gritty stuff for recent former SecState to be saying. Sounds like she’s running, folks.
I dunno but apparently no one asked Hillary whether Bill’s 1994 “Budapest Memorandum” might be compared to Neville Chamberlain’s Munich agreement.
At least Hillry does not have a video to blame, but, there just might be some hidden dots to connect. Course, she can claim ignorance. s/
Russia has assets to protect in Sevastopol. Ukraine and Russia signed a treaty that allowed Russia to keep its fleet in Sevastopol. The agreement is that the Russian fleet is set to remain there until at least 2042. Furthermore, Crimea is 60% Russian. Crimea has a 200 year history of being Russian until it was given to the Ukraine in 1954 by the communists.
Hillary is taking and running with half truths, hoping that no one will notice.
Indeed! But why stop there ya ignorant __________. What about Uncle Ho's actions in South Vietnam? And China and North Korea in South Korea? Or China's actions in Tibet?
Considering what happened at Waco, any given SS group would do.
Stupid. A good reason why she never should be elected President. If she thinks Putin and Hitler are the same, she needs to declare war, draft 10,000,000, up taxes, rationing, put Rosie the Riveter back into the factories for that’s what it took to fight Hitler and Putin is even stronger with the bomb. Put up or shut up.
So Hillie gave Adolph a reset button too? Who knew?
Abysmal defines her participation quite accurately.
That's very good..
I had Saul Alinsky in mind.
There is no historical comparison, she is full of BS and trying to make herself look tough.
Crimea belonged to Russia since 1783. Sudentenland never belonged to Germany.
Well, Hillary “Benito/Stalin Mix” Clinton would know.
That matches up nicely with standard democrat characteristics!
What exactly is she talking about?
Women have had equal rights in Corporate America, education, etc. For decades now.
So is she saying that unless Congress is 50% women, that somehow it’s illegal discrimination?
Women receive 57% of all bachelor’s degrees from college nowadays. What exact opportunities was she denied when she was coming up?
Apparently, Hitllary has long been unaware of Godwin’s Law, eh? Typical for lefties.
And Hilary is an Eva Braun wanabe.
Yes, and someone managed to make into all fit in the Clinton name.
Guess he re-set HER button!
Putin would probably compare her to Neville Chamberlain and he would be correct.
This woman is dangerous. I’m afraid more dangerous than Bush and Obama combined.
uhhh....I’m no Putin fan, but until he kills 10 or 20 million people, the comparison is a bit crass.
Hillary(!) has a severe case of Putin envy. if only she had the power Putin has, she’d show the world her best Stalin “profile in courage”.
Endorsed by the muslim brotherhood.
haha, that would only describe his domestic policy. He is more like Jimmy Carter in geo-politics.
Ukrainian regime/State Department/EU=Hitler is this week's Putin meme.
Our task is to determine which meme has more grains of truth.
Until Obama, we would have believed the U.S.
Now, we believe no one, with at least three more years of hell remaining.
Sounds like shes running, folks.
The fact that she is even considered a POSSIBLE candidate indicates how far and how fast this nation has fallen.
No one on the left really ever listens to what she says, they merely start swooning as soon as she speaks, and that heightened state of ecstasy somehow closes off the ears and shuts down the brain. Otherwise, they’d have to admit that “the smartest woman in the world” moniker is nowhere even close to the truth.
Not to mention that “Crimea” sounds like “Mena”.
