Md. House bill would link gun, criminal registries [Gun Confiscation]

The House of Delegates is considering a bill that would link Maryland’s gun registry to its criminal database.

State law requires gun owners to surrender their weapons if they’re convicted of felonies or any violent crimes, but Del. Luiz Simmons, D-Montgomery, said Maryland State Police lack a systematic way of enforcing this. They can’t use their databases to identify gun owners convicted of crimes.

Simmons is chief sponsor of legislation to make that link.

State Police estimate that if they linked the databases, they would find 10 percent of registered gun owners — about 110,000 people — would be disqualified. They estimate a rate of 1 percent each year thereafter.

Under Simmons’ plan, police would run a systematic check at least twice a year.

The Department of Legislative Services believes it would cost about $300,000 to create the database. The department also anticipates a need for seven new full-time troopers to investigate findings from the new database, with a cost of more than $1 million a year for salaries and equipment.

California linked its gun and criminal registries in 2007 and has since sized more than 10,000 guns from people convicted of violent crimes, according to a news release from Simmons’ office. As of last year, the state had identified another 40,000 guns that police needed to track down, the news release states.

There are about1.1 million records in Maryland’s gun registry and more than 3 million in the criminal database, according to the Department of Legislative Services’ report.

Several independent gun advocates submitted written testimony before a Tuesday hearing. They argued against the measure, calling it unnecessary and potentially invasive.

“This smacks of a police state mentality,” said a resident named Ronald Smith.

Simmons was set to testify before the House Judicial Committee Tuesday evening.

They’ll continue to take as much as they can until they’re staring at about 20,000 of us exercising our RKBA right outside their office windows. Then they’ll drop a deuce in their shorts and rethink their whole life.

The highway patrol may be capable of dragging drunk drivers from behind the wheel, but if they get involved in criminal law enforcement, in violation of the Second Amendment, they’re gonna be way above their little heads. Here in NC, at least.

WHERE IS THE MONEY COMING FROM?

Time to buy MORE guns and tell these gun grabbing cowards to

More like, it's time for gun owning conservatives from other states to get into their trucks and join in solidarity with the targeted citizens, just like we should do for Connecticut. Anything else is basically just cheap posturing. And in the absence of a bunch of truckloads of out-of-state supporters, it is wise for Maryland citizens to bury their guns in their back yard so they can choose the right time to fight against tyranny. If you let the JBTs choose, you lose.

“or any violent crimes”

With the “or” added, it is clear the behavior wasn’t a felony, so just what would this include?

“Resisting arrest”? Which may mean you shrugged your shoulders at the wrong time....

Sorry, $300,000 won’t even cover the cost of installing the software, much less maintaining it and making it usable.
This won’t be some little mom and pop bookkeeping program hosted on someone’s PC.

Exactly. Vague wording works for them. They can then invoke this to deny anyone they care to their Constitutionally protected right. Well, they can try.

This also sets a bad precedent. Gee, why shouldn't we link to XYZ too. After all, would you want someone who is X owning a gun? Eventually they'll find a reason to try to deny everyone.

Not tinfoil hat. This is so obviously their agenda it isn't even remotely funny anymore. Remember all the assurances that registration was just about keeping firearms out of the hands of criminals. (how they planned to convince criminals to try to register I don't know but...) They said loudly and repeatedly "Oh, be serious, we'd never use registration to confiscate your guns! What nut-jobs!" Well, look at what has happened in California, what is happening in Connecticut, and what they're proposing in Maryland. Every single one of them has been revealed as the lying sacks of excrement they are. Never trust a liberal, ever.

The NRA et. al. and all those people decried as "gun nuts" were right: REGISTRATION IS CONFISCATION. It is only a matter of time. NEVER REGISTER YOUR FIREARMS, NEVER SURRENDER THEM.

they would find 10 percent of registered gun owners...

This is strictly an aside but have you ever wondered why that "10 percent" shows up so frequently in a discussion of almost any subject calling for an estimate? I suspect it's because the number is pulled out of thin air and seems reasonable.

You’ve got to take into consideration the fact people vote Dem only is most likely because they come from a Dem family. I believe many of those you describe only listened/read liberal MSM. But there is creedence to the fact many are from the 60’s Woodstock, LSD, anti-war crowd. And YES,,,, some of them are just plain ignorant.

I don’t understand why that is unclear. Felonies or violent crimes. Many felonies are not violent, and I’m sure a few violent outbursts are not officially felonies.

Am I the only 1 that thinks this doesn’t speak well for Maryland?

State Police estimate that if they linked the databases, they would find 10 percent of registered gun owners — about 110,000 people — would be disqualified.

I was just getting ready to mention that all of the criminals with unregistered guns would still be out there, but your graphic says it all.
