ABC Frets Over Pro-American Cadillac Ad: 'Arrogant' and 'Xenophobic?'
NewsBusters ^ | 6 Mar 2014 | Scott Whitlock

Posted on 03/06/2014 2:37:43 PM PST by mandaladon

The journalists at Good Morning America on Thursday were sufficiently provoked by a pro-American Cadillac commercial that they devoted a whole segment to wondering if the spot was "arrogant" and "xenophobic." GMA's reporters, who couldn't find any time to cover former IRS head Lois Lerner pleading the Fifth on Capitol Hill, devoted almost three minutes to the "backlash" against the car commercial.

The ad features a man strolling around his large house, praising the free enterprise system and the work ethic of Americans: "Other countries, they work. They stroll home. They stop by the café. They take August off. Off!" Co-host George Stephanopoulos worried, "Is it selling a confident take on America with a sense of humor or showing off an arrogant caricature that is just plain obnoxious?"

Journalist Nick Watt asserted that the spot has been "lambasted by plenty others online as arrogant, xenophobic, ugly Americanism."

In fairness, Watt did note that some are "praising" the commercial. He featured a clip of Fox New contributor Jonathan Hoenig who touted, "Here's an advertisement that actually celebrates Americanism.

But, the ABC hosts clearly sided with the aggrieved left. Robin Roberts appeared disgusted, complaining, "But, oh my goodness. And what's wrong with taking more than two weeks off?"

Guest co-host Amy Robach agreed: "It's bragging rights in this country to say you didn't take your vacation days. Sad."

To watch the entire commercial, go here.

The funniest thing is, these lefty regressives who lament the “work ethic” in this commercial, worked their A$$es off getting where they are today (except maybe Ronan Farrow).

I’ve seen lots of workers save up vacation time only to give it away to someone sick in the office who needed time to recover.

To the left those are also evil Americans.

Everybody needs to calm down. It’s just business. Cadillac has done its market research and is pandering to the sensibilities of a target demographic: self-made, confident men. They aren’t praising America. They are praising their target market and doing their best to push its buttons.

“Makes me smile everytime I see that commercial. I love it!”

Yeah, same here. It will be interesting to see if the add sells caddy’s. If yes, then we will see more commercials of similar theme in the future. Hope so....

Personally I am offended that they use the name American Broadcasting Company.

A company that hates America and thinks American Culture is xenophobic shouldn’t have “American” in their company name.

It offends me that their company is even associated with America, much less that they incorporate the name as part of their identity.

If they hate America and what it stands for then they should change their name.

They are the other one of Edward’s “Two Americas”. And their ‘America” is one of Pajamaboys, Muslims, 15 buck/hr burger flipping transvestites and Karl Marx.

you see...it is “we” that are unAmerican.

Of course they are, and doing a fine job of it. But like it or not, commercial advertising doesn't just push products. It also pushes attitudes and ideas; same as commercial entertainment. Whether Cadillac intends to or not, they're pushing the idea that confident, successful Americanism is a Good Thing. The brash narrator is the hero of that commercial, not the villain.

I say the hell with them.

“We went to to the Moon, and we left. You know why? We were bored”.

There’s alot of truth in this. The moon became an ordinary, desolate place. Imagination ceased. Stick to the space probes and telescopes for imagination science.

It is refreshing to see a commericial not belittling American lifestyle. If I see another windmill in the background, I throw up a little.

Neal McDonough

He was in Flags of Our Fathers, Band of Brothers, Star Trek: First Contact, Justified (TV series), and a lot more. Excellent actor.

And when his kids turn out ruined from parental neglect, our hero will have plenty of money to buy a judge and send his brat to country club rehab.

I see nothing wrong with the commercial....although I would never buy a Cadillac or a GM product for that matter.

My husband & I have busted our butts for 17 years building our small business and we prefer BMW.

Could you be more dead on? Absolutely not; however, doesn't mean the ad will work,

I heard Golfbag mention this today.

The commercial, though clever, was from the wrong company.

Cadillac makes overpriced re-badged Chevys.

Then they took bailout money.

No thank you, Cadillac.
