Explaining the failure, the taxpayer funded National Public Radio (NPR) announced
Jonah Goldberg at National Review Online helpfully named the "handful of southern Democrats", something NPR failed to do. Here they are:
Chris Coons (Del.)
Bob Casey (Pa.)
Mark Pryor (Ark.)
Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.)
Joe Manchin (W.V.)
Joe Donnelly (Ind.)
John Walsh (Mont.)
And, of course, Harry Reid (Nev.), who did it for procedural grounds.
What's that you say? Only two of the eight, or just 1/4, are southern Democrats; 3/4 are northern Democrats, some very far north.
So why did NPR, which must have some limited knowledge of US geography, label the dissenting Democrats as southern? Hmmm.

I think they were implying “redneck” or something similar.
If you oppose an O appointee, you have to be a Southern Racist Redneck. That is the talking point.
In this case, they’re using “Southern” as a euphemism for “racist”.
They put the music on a station that has overlapping signals from 3 or 4 other FM outlets, and thus cannot be heard clearly, if at all. Incompetent engineering.
Millions for Marx. Nothing for Mozart?
WV ain’t the South, suh.
libs using hate speech code words?
NPR once paid Mumia to do special broadcasts from his jail cell.
The Southern United Statescommonly referred to as the American South, Dixie, or simply the Southis an area comprising the southeastern and south-central United States. The region is known for its culture and history, having developed its own customs, musical styles and varied cuisines that have helped distinguish it in some ways from the rest of the United States. The Southern ethnic heritage is diverse and includes strong European (mostly English, Scotch-Irish and Scottish), African, and some Native American components.[2] Several Southern states (Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia) were English Colonies that sent delegates to sign the Declaration of Independence and then fought against the English along with the Northern Colonists during the Revolutionary War. The basis for much Southern culture derives from the pride in these states being among the 13 original colonies (and much of the population of the South had fore-fathers who emigrated west from these colonies). Manners and customs reflect the early population of the South's relationship with England as well as that of Africa and to some extent the native populations.[3]
The question of how to define the subregions in the South has been the focus of research for nearly a century.[19][20]
As defined by the United States Census Bureau,[1] the Southern region of the United States includes sixteen states. As of 2010, an estimated 114,555,744 people, or thirty-seven percent of all U.S. residents, lived in the South, the nation's most populous region.[21] The Census Bureau defined three smaller units, or divisions:
The Council of State Governments, an organization for communication and coordination between state governments, includes in its South regional office the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.[22]
With all due respect to you and gratitude for posting your source, Delaware, Maryland and West Virginia are not southern states.
NPR has been ‘sliding’ on the facts for decades.
If you agree with this Wikipedia article then West Virginia, Maryland and Delaware were Fighting on the wrong side during the War of NORTHERN Aggression.
Why not add SOUTH Dakota to the list?
This definition was developed by someone who believes everything south of Philly is “The South”, excepting the Left Coast.
I think where they’re coming from is that Delaware and Maryland were slave states on the south side of the Mason-Dixon line and West Virginia was part of Virginia until 1863.
I always thought the Mason Dixon line was the official divider.
I haven’t spent much time in MD, but I find WV to be much more culturally southern than a significant part of VA that surrounds DC.
WV, KY and NE TN are difficult to distinguish.
Lib logic: if the two southern Democrats had voted with the Democrats, then with Reid’s vote it would have been 50-50, and Biden would have broken the tie. Ergo, its the fault of the two southern Democrats, ignoring the six northern ones entirely.
These are the same folks who think people born in New Mexico are illegal aliens
Liberal bigotry is almost unassailable, since they are deeply convinced of their own “neutrality” with regard to all things. It’s usually not their fault. The very foundation of post-modern “liberalism” is a disregard for objective reality.
I need my ‘Winston Smith pocket thesaurus’ to understand the libs
“Southern Democrats...”
NPR’s lip curling sneer.
