Tea Party Still Winning GOP Debate

Why the Tea Party is still winning… And why GOP incumbents are going to have to fight tooth and nail to hold on to their jobs… Attitudes about the health-care law are more nuanced than the political debate might suggest… February jobs report is better than expected: 175,000 jobs created last month, unemployment rate ticks up to 6.7%... Ukraine: Not as divisive of a political subject as you might think… Previewing CPAC’s Day 2 and recapping Day 1… And best of luck, Domenico -- we’re going to miss you.

FIRST THOUGHTS.

Why the Tea Party is still winning:

Yes, some of the more prominent establishment Republicans (John Cornyn, Pete Sessions, Greg Abbott) won their primaries on Tuesday. And, yes, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell seems well positioned to win his in May. But if you want to see signs that the Tea Party is winning right now -- and that McConnell and other Senate Republicans facing primary challenges possibly will have to fight for their political lives -- just look what has transpired over the past week. While Cornyn won his primary and avoided a run-off, 41% of Texas Republicans still voted for someone else, including Rep. Steve Stockman, who ran a non-existent campaign (can you run a NON-campaign?). In other words, more than 4 in 10 GOP voters broke against the No. 2 Senate Republican, even though he hasn’t committed any ideological offenses (other than recruiting Charlie Crist for the Senate in 2009). Then look at the other results from Texas: The VERY conservative Dan Patrick seems poised to become the state’s next lieutenant governor, and a handful of incumbent GOP state legislators lost to primary challengers. And then yesterday, we saw McConnell raise a rifle at CPAC, suggesting that he needed a stunt...

Steve Stockman did the right thing holding Cornyn’s feet to the fire. Pete Sessions hasn’t got much room to push amnesty.

Stockman can work for the NRA or some other gun group as a lobbyist in the future.

The argument for freedom and the free market always wins the debate in the forum of ideas. Why? Because we’re right and they’re wrong. Truth stands the test. That’s why FR should welcome those who genuinely want to debate these issue (not disruptive types). We have the light that can shine for those in dark places.

VERY well stated. Needs repeating. This is why we all need to donate even just a little to FReeper. It IS an excellent spot to meet like-minded folks for exchange of ideas.

The problem is, is that the Stupid Party is psychologically incapable of making these arguments. Instead, they keep accepting the Left’s premise, be it homo marriage, minimum-wage laws, or the size and scope of government. This results in moving the goal posts further left to the Left’s ultimate objective.

That's also cool. But what about different-minded folks? We have something to offer them also. How many in this country have been duped and indoctrinated into unsupportable socialism? WE have the answers for those who wish to have an honest debate. They are not a threat to FR, rather, FR can be a lifeline to these folks (as I said, not for those who want to disrupt (many of those already here - they don't have to be Leftists necessarily). But those with different views are not per se saboteurs. We shouldn't be afraid of them. We should welcome them IMO.

Indeed those yearning / open to news and the truth most definitely welcome, one and all.

Hopefully we can expand out “user base” substantially. I was a long time lurker before I signed up, too.

Excellent points you make.

The Lt Gov Democratic candidate is a wise latina.

Leticia Van de Putte, a Democratic state senator from San Antonio, said she had T-shirts made, reading “Another wise Latina woman,” as soon as she heard the controversial term. She sent them to nearly 200 relatives, friends and fellow politicians with a card that said: “The Hon. Sonia Sotomayor has broken ‘the glass ceiling’ for all Latinas.”
