Not Paying Union Dues, in Michigan
National Review ^ | 3.7.14 | Jillian Kay Melchior

Unions are finding sneaky ways to exact dues — but workers are fighting back.

Two Michigan teachers will finally be allowed to end their union membership in the Michigan Education Association and will be refunded any dues they paid during this school year, according to a settlement agreement signed this week.

William “Ray” Arthur, a teacher and wrestling coach at Petoskey Senior High School, and Miriam Chanski, a Coopersville kindergarten teacher, tried to quit the teachers’ union after Michigan adopted legislation to become the 24th right-to-work state in the U.S.

Both Arthur and Chanski wrote letters informing the MEA that they wished to leave, but neither was aware that, according to an obscure part of the union’s 1973 bylaws, members can resign only during the month of August. Though the information for the August opt-out period is technically on the MEA website, it is buried and doesn’t pop up in most simple searches.

More to come IMHO...

If the House and Senate hold in MI, my guess is more jobs come to MI as they well be somewhat certain RTW will not be repealed soon. It may have already started. A business in Canton MI ( Auto parts supplier ) was bringing in 150+ jobs in from Ohio. The only reason I could think of other than transportation cost is that OH is not RTW. Indiana is also RTW and stole many a job from MI, the question begs will they head back soon to MI.

And we haven't even discussed that MI is and will be a "Fracking State"... Stay Tuned...

In Wisconsin there is a state law that specifies if a contract exists and is in effect, union dues are to be automatically drawn from the employees paycheck.

Yes, but as I understand it, part of the Walker Revolution and the closing of the State House was about the political contributions and that the auto-deduction was removed. No? am I wrong here?

Only during the month of August, when it’s 44 degrees F and the sun rises in the west and set in the east. ;)

The unions keep control by fear and deception, just like the dems and good commies everywhere.

These two teachers took a BIG risk doing this. God bless and protect them. Here’s hoping many more will follow their lead.
