Woman fatally shot in thrift store accident

CHICAGO -- A woman working at a Chicago-area thrift store was fatally shot when a gun hidden in donated clothing accidentally discharged, police said.

Police said Carmen Dominguez, 54, was sorting donated clothing at a Unique Thrift Store in the 9300 block of South Ashland Avenue in the city's Washington Heights neighborhood on Friday morning. A male coworker she was working with discovered a .22 caliber handgun hidden inside a sock. When he shook the item out of the sock, police say the gun accidentally discharged in his hand.

Dominguez was struck by a bullet in the chest and taken to Christ Hospital in serious condition. She was later pronounced dead.

Yes, this is my thought as well.

Also it’s weird cause just yesterday I was sitting at a light and noticed a goodwill drop box to the side. I had a brief thought wondering if it’d even be safe for the people that have to go through the boxes because you never know what someone might put in either as a prank or incidentally like having buggy clothing (roaches, lice)or semen stained sheets, etc. I find it gross to think about!

It fell out of the sock, into his hand, and fired itself. Sure.

I have a .22 that my Dad modified for a really light trigger pull - between the gas ramp up front and the light trigger, it is great for competition shooting but if the safety is off and you give it a little jar, it is possible for it to fire from it.

A gun in disrepair may have issues too - being hidden in a sock raises questions about how long and what condition.

Story sounds petty lame....the chances of a firearm discharging from being dropped is pretty low....not impossible but a lot of things have to line up in the universe for it to happen. Sounds more like an accidental shooting!!

A Chicago sock option, gun holster. Do we need to ban socks now?

It is tragic, thou.

Surprised this many post without a discussion of how a center mass shot with a lowly 22 can be deadly.

In days of old
When knights were bold
and holsters weren’t invented,
They used their socks
to wrap their Glocks,
and accidents were prevented.

Milman Parry (1902-1935), one of the most influential Homeric scholars of the 20th century, was killed when a revolver in his suitcase accidentally went off while he was unpacking in a hotel room. A brilliant scholar but having a loaded revolver in his suitcase was obviously a dumb thing to do.

Not a Darwin Award winner, because he already had children. His son Adam was later a classics professor at Yale and also died young (killed in a motorcycle accident).
