School administrators and Will County sheriff's police are scratching their heads over the discovery of a shell casing today at Hadley Middle School in south suburban Homer Glen.

Will County Sheriff Deputy Chief Ken Kaupas said three dogs trained in finding weapons and gunpowder found no other weapons-related items during a two-hour investigation of classrooms and lockers.

"Obviously we took the situation seriously," he said.

Kaupas said the shell casing had turned up around

I hope it didn’t shoot anybody.
Was anyone injured in the resulting mass panic?

You mean....all I have to do is go to the range, practice with 50 or 100 rounds, pick up a few pieces of spent brass, go by my local schoolyard and toss one of the shell casings onto the playground and watch this kind of FUN ensue? Wotta wonderful idea to kill a lazy Tuesday afternoon!

My high school rifle team used to shoot in the basement of an elementary school. Two dozen armed teenagers walking into an elementary school twice a week intent on shooting and no one ever got hurt.

I think every public school in Chicago land should have several dozens of casings thrown onto the ground.

Use steel casings and nothing is lost.

When I read this, all I could think about was the opening scene of 2001 with the monkeys scratching their.... whatevers.

Or Sid Ceasar and his fellow actors being in awe of a dead person in History of the World...

Close “to home” for me. Having been a citizen volunteer in HG, I know a number of LEO in HG. Some carry revolvers (hint, hint). One is a FReeper.

:: Mike, how you doing today? ::

My youngest finished her primary schooling at HG-Hadley and, I’m betting that the brass they found is from a local LEO who didn’t realize s/he had dropped the casing when delivering and-or picking-up their kid.

Nothing to see here folks...move along.

Well I am betting some kid threw it down and got the exact reaction he was looking for. Stupid administrators once again overreacting.,

“There is no such thing as an ammunition “shell casing.”

Cartridge casings are commonly called shell casings even by shooters and yes, they are sometimes made of aluminum.

"Idiocy" is spot on! At the dedication of a historical maker at a local cemetery, (containing graves of veterans of all our wars from the Civil War to present) we had the local reserve honor guard fire a rifle salute.

Kids from three local schools immediately policed up the brass, (30-06, crimped mouth blanks) -- and then took them to school. All our (Texas rural) schools did was ask the kids to share their experience of the marker dedication...

(One liberal ditz teacher did freak out -- but she was soon put in her place by those with saner minds.)

I'm continually glad we bailed out of a place where liberal idiocy reigns, and moved back home to God's Country ("Texas", to those of you who are less fortunate) to retire!!

If diligent search were made, they might even find knives in the cafeteria kitchen.

Oh, the horror!

Seriesly though, if I were a student in that school, I'd be dropping a dozen or so every day, my friends would be too.

You guys shot in the basement? In junior high I was in the California Cadet Corps. and we shot outside on the tennis courts!, during bad weather we shot across the street at the Boys and Girls Club and that was 1970,71. All it takes is 40 years to pansify America.

When at the range, it would not be unusual for brass ejected from somebody else's pistol to wind up hitting me. Sometimes it would even fall into a pocket.

Imagine walking along and noticing you have a cartridge case in your pocket, and tossing it.

As others have noted, I could also imagine some kid bringing in some brass cases and scattering them sound just for the amusement value of the reaction.

This reminds me of the old Arlo Guthrie story about the last guy - you know, the guy that’s got it worse than everyone else. All he had to do to get some attention was call the FBI from a pay phone and spout some Marxist drivel and the whole resources of the FBI would be rolling to find him.

Course today they would probably make him Secretary of Labor.
