School administrators and Will County sheriff's police are scratching their heads over the discovery of a shell casing today at Hadley Middle School in south suburban Homer Glen.
Will County Sheriff Deputy Chief Ken Kaupas said three dogs trained in finding weapons and gunpowder found no other weapons-related items during a two-hour investigation of classrooms and lockers.
"Obviously we took the situation seriously," he said.
Kaupas said the shell casing had turned up around

Hadley Principal Kristen Schroeder immediately placed the school on a soft lockdown
I used to carry stuff like that when I was a kid. I would have ended up in jail.
Don’t they call 7 inch gun brass, casings? Maybe he was carrying the bress from a howitzer!
Close “to home” for me. Having been a citizen volunteer in HG, I know a number of LEO in HG. Some carry revolvers (hint, hint). One is a FReeper.
:: Mike, how you doing today? ::
My youngest finished her primary schooling at HG-Hadley and, I’m betting that the brass they found is from a local LEO who didn’t realize s/he had dropped the casing when delivering and-or picking-up their kid.
Nothing to see here folks...move along.
Correct..some kid that thinks the way I did in high school, dropped it, moved on and sat back and laughed his as off.
Well I am betting some kid threw it down and got the exact reaction he was looking for. Stupid administrators once again overreacting.,
Those who can, do; those who can't, teach.
“There is no such thing as an ammunition “shell casing.”
Cartridge casings are commonly called shell casings even by shooters and yes, they are sometimes made of aluminum.

Did they call out the bomb squad?
In further news, police found brass paperweights, doorknobs, and toilet fixtures in the school. Surveillance by hidden cameras show the shiny, yellow metal alloy has failed to attack anyone yet.
Figures. No pics.
Probably decades old.
If you truly enjoy watching insanity, just go into any school or business and drop a fluorescent lightbulb on the floor.
Kids from three local schools immediately policed up the brass, (30-06, crimped mouth blanks) -- and then took them to school. All our (Texas rural) schools did was ask the kids to share their experience of the marker dedication...
(One liberal ditz teacher did freak out -- but she was soon put in her place by those with saner minds.)
I'm continually glad we bailed out of a place where liberal idiocy reigns, and moved back home to God's Country ("Texas", to those of you who are less fortunate) to retire!!
If diligent search were made, they might even find knives in the cafeteria kitchen.
Oh, the horror!
Seriesly though, if I were a student in that school, I'd be dropping a dozen or so every day, my friends would be too.
A guy called Billy George used to bring in a live round from a fifty for show and tell. Thing looked like a freakin’ missile to us 2nd graders. No one cared that he was carrying it around in his hand all day (way to heavy for a little kids pocket).
You guys shot in the basement? In junior high I was in the California Cadet Corps. and we shot outside on the tennis courts!, during bad weather we shot across the street at the Boys and Girls Club and that was 1970,71. All it takes is 40 years to pansify America.
Just remember to clean the brass of any fingerprints and DNA.
At least they didnt call it a bullet.
I’m surprised they didn’t call it “An Assault Glock.”
School on lockdown after GARBAGE was found. Is a spent casing more or less dangerous as a class 2 finger gun?
Imagine walking along and noticing you have a cartridge case in your pocket, and tossing it.
As others have noted, I could also imagine some kid bringing in some brass cases and scattering them sound just for the amusement value of the reaction.
Possibly fired around 1901 by a hunter or farmer?
