China draws 'red line' on North Korea, says won't allow war on peninsula

BEIJING (Reuters) - China declared a "red line" on North Korea on Saturday, saying that China will not permit chaos or war on the Korean peninsula, and that peace can only come through denuclearization.

China is North Korea's most important diplomatic and economic supporter, though Beijing's patience with Pyongyang has been severely tested following three nuclear tests and numerous bouts of saber rattling, including missile launches.

"The Korean peninsula is right on China's doorstep. We have a red line, that is, we will not allow war or instability on the Korean peninsula," Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters on the sidelines of China's annual largely rubber-stamp parliament.

Wang called upon all parties to "exercise restraint", adding that "genuine and lasting peace" on the peninsula was only possible with denuclearization.

This is nonsense. North Korea could not exist for a year without the support of China. China and North Korea work together closely on cyber crime and threatening and intimidating western countries. There is no "red line".

I am still convinced that the most likely scenario, and possibly the one with the best results, would be for China to quickly invade the North, decapitate the government, and put a China-friendly government in its place, with instructions to “normalize” North Korea with Chinese style capitalism, and to begin peace talks with the South.

This would benefit China across the board. No longer having a rogue regime with nukes nearby, a lot of Korean illegal immigrants, a lot friendlier relations with South Korea with resultant trade, etc.

That’s what I think also - and the US should offer to help by neutralizing North Korea’s air defenses. The danger, of course, is that Kim Jong-un will instantly unleash an all-out, retaliatory artillery barrage which would essentially destroy Seoul, so South Korea is probably not too hot on the plan.

China would reject any US involvement, and as you point out, the North Korean weapons are pointed South. It would be almost essential to China that their invasion is with blitzkrieg tactics. Their various missions would be:

1) Secure all nuclear weapons and missiles.
2) Decapitate the government.
3) Let all North Korean military commanders know to stand down or die. That if they and their units do not resist, they will continue to exist under the puppet government.

Probably the biggest threat would be their ships at sea, so the Chinese submarine fleet would have target solutions on every one of them.
