Detroit Police Chief Warns Criminals: People Will Protect Themselves

Detroit Police Chief James Craig wants criminals to know that they shouldn’t just be afraid of police anymore—they also need to worry about homeowners who are ready to use a firearm to protect themselves.

“A lot of Detroiters are fed up,” he said in a recent interview with WDIV-TV. “They’re tired and they’ve been dealing with this epidemic of violence. They’re afraid and they have a right to protect themselves.”

After all, when seconds count, police are only minutes away, right?

“If you are confronted with an immediate threat to your safety, you’re not going to have time to dial 911,” Craig said. “It becomes an issue of, the threat is here, I have to respond to the threat.”

However, Craig was careful to say that citizens must exercise common sense. In other words, there needs to be a true threat coming at you and you can’t chase someone down the street. But he wants would-be criminals to know that they need to worry about a few things. “They’ve got to worry about a police department that is going to aggressively find you when you commit an act of violence. And you got to also worry about the good Detroiters who are not going to put up with the violence.”

Its really amazing to see Detroit residents praising police these days. It shifts the whole dynamic.

Craig has ended the idiotic “virtual precincts” which were nothing but 9 to 5 precincts that were overstaffed during low crime hours and closed during the high crime hours.

He’s also threatened to criminally charge dispatchers who lie to callers. This comes after a couple of cases where people were murdered while waiting for police who were never even dispatched.

He’s working on getting the police chopper into the air as well. Its paid for but has never been used. The city was supposed to pay for maintenance and fuel and the state police were to do the flying. The chopper went immediately into storage and the operating money disappeared.

He also cut the mayor’s security detail from 20 officers to 6.

Michigan is a legal carry state, it is a constitution thing.

We are actually moving towards repealing several out dated gun laws that restrict law abiding gun owners.

And we are mostly a red state, with the exception of a few cloisters of lefties.

Senate, house and state house are republican held.

It’s worth noting that the greatest criminal in all of Michigan history was a politician and capped his career with the looting of Detroit as mayor.

Police are not automatic fiends. They too can choose whether to be wise or foolish.

Exactly. The fact that they have been operating with zero discipline for years didn't help.

I live in the city itself..Detroit. This guy is the real deal. We’ve had 5 incidents in the last 2 weeks where the thugs got shot and killed by homeowners..the police now literally chuckle about it. Patrol cars are everywhere, they are hitting 35 dope houses a week. The Chief is getting death threats from the dealers. But, he was hired by the emergency manager, it’ll be interesting to see when and if the new Mayor gets his power back, he replaces and appoints his “own” chief.

Flush times brought unions and with them, the ability to hide from discipline. And so police became mediocre at best. Gone was the Officer Friendly of old.

Privations have forced some sense on the situation.

The emergency manager actually seems to have sense.

After this breath of fresh air, will the people put up with stink again? I hope not!

One on Domestic Charges, One on Rape and the other on I think $ issues. What say you?

I was born and raised in Michigan and will be completely retiring in a couple of years. I have a home up north and hope that stupid law about registering your handguns with the local police department (green card) is flushed. That law is why I have yet to move back home (also I have two children in college down here in VA).

In the end, I will move back with or without the repeal and just become an immediate criminal because I will never register a weapon with any government agency.

in January, 2 undercover officers saw a car just dart out in to traffic, coming out of a topless bar. Cops pulled the car over, and inside was newly elected councilman named Cushingberry, real first class idiot..they found open booze and weed in the car, they were gonna lock him up. Suddenly, an “old school Sargent pulls up, and says to cut em loose with just a minor traffic ticket. The new chief hit the roof, and suspended the sarg. Then, the officers were “mysteriously” sent to the wrong courtroom for the traffic tickets, so it got dismissed. The Chief said, “thats too bad”, and promptly re-instated the charges..lol. There’s def a tug of war goin on between this guy and that status quo...

I’ve read about this Chief before, and he seems like a good one. He wants people to be unafraid to defend themselves (therefore unhesitant), and I’d like to see a lot more like him.
