"Fiddler on the Roof," returning to Broadway

Teyve is coming back.

Producers Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel said Thursday that they will present a revival of "Fiddler on the Roof" — one of the last great musicals of Broadway's Golden Age — in the fall of 2015.

It will represent the fifth revival of the show, which features lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, music by Jerry Bock and a story by Joseph Stein.

There was no word on casting, although Bartlett Sher will direct and choreography will be by Hofesh Shechter, adapting Jerome Robbins' original work.

The Tony Award-winning musical about a Jewish milkman from the Ukrainian village of Anatevka is based on stories by Sholom Aleichem. It centers on Tevye, a poor Orthodox Jew with five rebellious daughters.

Okay, I can immediately come up with some mandatory script changes for this classic story: Rabbi is a woman; Golde is a feminist and one of the five daughters (I don't remember her name in the play) instead of marrying a Russian of Russian Orthodox faith, is actually a lesbian who runs off with her lesbian lover.

Perhaps good old Tevye realizes he is actually bisexual who's had a "thing" for the butcher!

Anyone care to comment on script changes besides me?

Thanks for the clarification.

I some what recently saw the movie version starring Topol and realized how much Tevye's "tradition" has been lost.

Surely a play that would "pack the house" on Broadway, must surely feature nudity, gay/lesbian/transgender and greed, perhaps a murder or two tossed in for good measure, to sell even one ticket to today's "self-actualized" culture.

I am not an expert on Broadway Musicals. It doesn’t seem like there has been a big, hit musical for awhile. Maybe you have hit on the reason why. Our art isn’t about entertaining people. It has become a means for liberals to rub everyone’s nose in their dysfunctional views.

I'm thinking you've hit the nail on the head!

Each and every "new" Broadway hit has to contain liberal culture views and the general audience just won't swallow it - enough to make it a smashing success!

Chill out. It was revived recently without any major changes. Bartlett Sher did a great South Pacific revival that was very faithful to the original.

The biggest hits these days are jukebox musicals...built on a catalog of songs the audience already knows (Rock of Ages, Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia). The few original hits of recent years would be Wicked and The Book of Mormon...both still running.
