La. Police Claim Man Shot And Killed Himself While Handcuffed
Newsone ^ | Mar 8, 2014

Louisiana state police are investigating the death Victor White, III, 22, who allegedly shot and killed himself while handcuffed in the back of a patrol car, reports The Advocate.

White was allegedly involved in an altercation and when deputies responded to the call they claim to have found illegal drugs on him which lead to his arrest.

White was in handcuffs with his hands behind his back when he was killed, allegedly by his own gun — which conveniently wasn’t found during the search that led to his arrest.

Read more below from The Advocate:

Once at the sheriff’s office, White became uncooperative and refused to exit the deputy’s patrol vehicle, reports CBS affiliate KLFY.

Trooper Stephen Hammons says White produced a handgun and fired one round, striking himself in the back.

White was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Sheriff Louis Ackal asked State Police to investigate the incident. State Police-led investigations in deaths involving officers are normal.

“We’re investigating how he got the gun,” Hammons said late Monday. “It’s too early in our investigation to comment further.”

Rev. Raymond Brown, president of National Action Now of New Orleans, said Monday night that his organization is looking into White’s death.

“Something is seriously wrong with this picture,” Brown said.

As previously reported by NewsOne, this isn’t the first time that a handcuffed Black man has died under suspicious circumstances.

In August 2012, Chavis Carter, a 21-year-old Mississippi man, was shot to death in the back of a Jonesboro, Ark. Police Department squad car. Police claim that he pulled the trigger even though he was handcuffed and shot on the right side of the head.

Carter’s mother said her son was left-handed.

Jonesboro Chief of Police Micheal Yates says the scenario is not far fetched at all.

“The average person who has never been in handcuffs, that never been around inmates or people in custody would react exactly the same way you just did: ‘How could that be possible?’ Well, fact of it is, it’s very possible. It’s quite easy,” Jonesboro Chief of Police Micheal Yates told CNN.

It’s just the sort of thing street thug would do.
Now, a banker at JP Morgan would be far more likely to kill himself with a nail gun, putting 8 nails into his chest.
Different strokes for different folks.

Sloppy search before being put in the car - Texas recently executed a scumbag who murdered the arresting officer from the back seat.

This kid must have been some sort of Houdini. What BS.
So they lost the gun that killed him? Next time one of these things comes up, I’ll bet the cover-up will be more thorough, that is the person will just disappear.

I'm not saying that this piece of trash probably didn't need killing, but I'm wondering:

Isn't it standard procedure to "pat down" a suspect for weapons before you handcuff them and put them in the back of a patrol car? If not, we need to re-write the scripts of every cop show that has ever been on TV.

Exact same thing occurred up here in Durham, NC, a very little while back. No, I don’t live in Durham, thank goodness.

The police came to the conclusion that he had a gun he was trying to access during the police ride into the clink.

Mmmm-hmmm......right.....

No real surprise. Gun in the waistband, placed just above the butt. The guy fumbles with the gun, in the course of which the barrel points upwards and discharges while a finger inadvertently depresses the trigger. The average street thug has no firearm safety awareness, which is anyhow difficult to implement, given that he is fumbling with a gun behind his back, going by feel alone.

I recall an incident. Two suspects in a drive by. No gun. One being questioned.....the other having been searched twice on the street and again before the cuffs were removed was being booked. Ten minutes later, the one being questioned gave up the location of the gun. The fat guy being booked had a 380 between his rather enormous butt cheeks.....one chambered.....6 more in the mag. Searched three times.

I was the booking officer....first week on the assignment.

I resolved to always remind myself that no one was searched until I searched him.

Some guys just can’t do the butt check. Me? All the way up to the elbow....if necessary. Lesson learned.

Da butt is #1 location for money...drugs...guns....knives....cellphones.

It is standard procedure, but some searches are more thorough than others, which is why cops are occasionally killed by suspects with guns they failed to find. A Mexican illegal was executed recently for just such a crime. I think it's a mix of respect for personal privacy and not wanting to probe too closely at the potentially stinky bits of a suspect's anatomy.

I do wear gloves. :^/

I relieved the watch when the guy was being searched at the desk for the 3rd time. A guy I went to the academy with...good bud...was doing it. I didn’t want to hurt his feelings by doing it again. D’uh.

Complacency kills. And when yer dead..it’s forever.

I did, however, gain a reputation on the street for the thoroughness of my gropery. Some bad guys asked for me by name. YEESH! :^0
