I originally thought Blarney Blowout in Mass referred to Blarney Frank.

I dont recall hearing about so many Pre-St. Patrick’s Day celebrations going on before this year. The radio stations are pushing it heavily too, hearing those commercials with the music; Lucky Charms Leprecahn Fiddles. Is this a new style or have I just not paid attention? People like a reason to get together with their friends and lift a few pints, nothing wrong with that, so long as they keep the ‘Irish Peace’.

I attended Umass beginning in 1969 and graduated in 1973. I hated every minute of it but continued there because it was a low cost option and a business degree would have value, which it did. The Administration and apparently the parents had no concept of expecting young people to rise to a higher standard. Excessive alcohol, drugs, sex, segregationist behavior by black students, and low academic standards were all the normal, every day atmosphere. Never once did I sense that the Administration had any thought of maintaining operational authority over the place. Bottom line is that no parent should ever curse a child they love by sending he or she to Umass.

I graduated high school around that same time and we would go up from time to time to UMass. It always seemed exactly that way to me as well. Those huge 20 or more story dorms were basically like housing projects.

Back in the day I had a ball at this place when I visited friends who went there. Girls & girls & endless beer.

Only 35? They are slacking. We used have 100-150 arrested.

Just like the Millenials; pretending it’s the eighties, and making a poor copy of it.

The area with the 22 story dorms is called Southwest. I lived in one of them for four years. There something like 8,000 students in an area of probably 20 acres. This is an example of government planning. It is interesting that you could see the place for what it was and I could too. I wonder how many other people have or had the same sense but just put up with those miserable conditions just to fit in?

Yeah I remember that now - Southwest. It’s sad but at least you made the best of it and moved on. So props for that!

College in the 80’s, now those were some fun times. I bet more alcoholics were spawned during those years than any other decade in history. At my college the only demonstration on campus in all four years was the time the administration wanted to cut the party days from 7 to 5 days per week. Probably the only demonstration every held where the tapped kegs were the rallying point.

My Dad would get bar supply catalogs. I bought my own tap. Saved us every time we bought a keg. My junior and senior years I never paid for beer. Best $50 I ever spent.

Southwest and the library. Good for at least one jumper a year.

I could only tolerate going down to UMass a couple of times per year.

It’s funny, my niece rented an apartment at Brittany Manor a couple of summers ago. The place is respectable now. It used to be a den of sin.

It’s sad when the student body is more mature and sensible than the student body.

The American academy is a disgrace.

Collecting bottles and cans around the scene of the mayhem Saturday night, Amherst resident Raul Colon told the Gazette that the day's events looked like "a revolution, like in the countries that have revolutions between the students and the government."
