It would be rather stupid to ban smoking in a state that grows tobacco.

They did this in GA a few years back. The number of conservatives who voted for it was frightening.

At my very Conservative church of Christ congregation, nearly all of the older men fire up a cigarette or two or five after services. Both the preacher and I no longer smoke but neither of us mind it one bit. In fact, the kitchen downstairs still has ashtrays as a courtesy for the numerous smokers. It may be partly cultural since the Stone-Campbell movement of the 19th Century had its roots in Kentucky, where some of the finest tobacco still grows.

And, as I mentioned in several pasts posts here in FR, no only is it not a smoke-free zone, but it's also not a gun-free zone. Everyone that I know is a gun owner and a good number of them bring their guns to services, including the preacher. He's often stated in sermons that guns secure our freedom to worship God. And that's 100% on target.

So I guess the term "smoking gun" is quite apt for us.

I quit around 40 years ago. I don’t like to eat or work next to smokers in confined spaces unless proper scrubbers are used. I have no problem if proper scrubbers are used.

Then don’t eat or work in those places. Government has no business dictating whether people can smoke or allow smoking on property they own.

I often do vote with my feet. I have no problems with properly scrubbed air in restaurants or offices(or separate areas ) and I avoid the worst that do not.

I believe businesses that don’t will lose business unless they put in air filtration. Just MHO.

Although I quit smoking more than 30 years ago, I still very much enjoy the aroma. Like I mentioned a few posts back, after church services, when I'm enjoying coffee in the downstairs kitchen, the smoke is actually quite pleasant to my nostrils.

It also serves to reminds me of my college days in the early 1960s when I used to ride the Greyhound bus back to home from school for holidays. In those days, nearly everyone smoked (as did I) and since the olfactory sense evokes such strong recollections, all of my associative memories with smoking are very positive. Growing up as I did in the 1940s, there was time when a good host made sure that ashtrays and lighters were omnipresent.

Smoke of any kind, not just tobacco, irritates my sister in law, yet she adores the smell of tobacco smoke - it reminds her of her dad and days when people were polite and didn’t get offended by the least little thing.

For the longest time I wouldn’t smoke in her presence, except if we were in a bar, and even in my own home I would leave the room. One day she asked me to not do that and explained how much she enjoyed the aroma (her word, not mine) and it only bothered her in enclosed places without proper ventilation.

I enjoy cigar smoke (in a non confined area and will have one, once a year or so) Cigarette smoke now makes me gag. Though I do especially remember enjoying a smoke with my morning coffee.

As a child and teen I was in homes, cars, restaurants where people were smoking. I rode my bike in the fog of ddt, and frequently bought bags of penny candy. My mother cooked with lard. And wonder of wonders I’m still here at sixty-five

Astonishing! The city in which I live banned it 20 years ago and the state (MA) 10 years ago.

Nice to know there are still places with common sense.
