KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Military radar indicates that the missing Boeing 777 jet may have turned back before vanishing, Malaysia's air force chief said Sunday as authorities were investigating up to four passengers with suspicious identifications.
The revelations add to the uncertainties surrounding the final minutes of flight MH370, which was carrying 239 people when it lost contact with ground controllers somewhere between Malaysia and Vietnam after leaving Kuala Lumpur early Saturday morning for Beijing.
Air force chief Rodzali Daud didn't say which direction the plane veered when it apparently went off course, or how long it flew in that direction.
"We are trying to make sense of this," he told a media conference. "The military radar indicated that the aircraft may have made a turn back and in some parts, this was corroborated by civilian radar."

Israelis and other sources say the plane definitely DID turn around without consultation or warning.
Was their radio broken?
Pretty sure they were hijacked. I have been thinking this since yesterday....just too many odd things.
How did they know do soon that some passports were fuddled with?
Could an aircraft which was affected by an explosion or loss of control look on radar like a plane turning back? Just a thought.

Other threads have mentioned automatic pinging on this plane, so it’s not just a question of failed radios. I’m guessing it took some very specific knowledge to stop the automated features an hour before the plane actually disappeared.
FReepers with more specific knowledge of the plane will chime in, I’m sure.
Just heard on BBC that Interpol has database of millions of stolen passport numbers. Seems that security check was not done (or terrorists had a helpful agent at the counter).
Yep. If there was no radio contact it means one of three things: The whole plane “failed” unexpectedly (exploded, Flight 800 style). It was hijacked. The radio was broken.
And the odds of the latter happening are rather unlikely.

Some articles have ruled out an explosion saying it would have been picked up by satellites?
That explains the five people who cancelled out at the last minute. They were the back up team in case their buddies got flagged by the passports.

For which the whole Boeing 747 fleet should have been grounded to affect repairs. But this was never done. What does that tell you?

Data from Interpol show there were 39 million lost or stolen passports as at the end of last year.
There is no debris. Think 9/11 when the plane was driven straight into the field. No debris there either.

Yep, if I recall, the FAA let the Airlines make “the Fix” during regular Maint. schedules.
As with *any* missing, or destroyed aircraft, they checked the passenger manifest, and the name of an individual appeared, who was not only *not* on that plane, but had reported his passport stolen months ago.
That began further investigations which revealed that more than one passport listed on the manifest was suspicious...

It will be interesting if the four or five passengers who never got on the plane also have stolen passports.
