How did they know do soon that some passports were fuddled with?

How did they know do soon that some passports were fuddled with?

Just heard on BBC that Interpol has database of millions of stolen passport numbers. Seems that security check was not done (or terrorists had a helpful agent at the counter).

As with *any* missing, or destroyed aircraft, they checked the passenger manifest, and the name of an individual appeared, who was not only *not* on that plane, but had reported his passport stolen months ago.

That began further investigations which revealed that more than one passport listed on the manifest was suspicious...
