‘Stand your ground’ laws must be clarified
Milwaukee J-S ^ | 9 mar 2014 | James Causey

The mother of Trayvon Martin is on a mission. Her goal is to change the current "stand your ground" laws because these laws may make it more palatable for shooters to kill the person they are "scared of" rather than fire a warning shot.

Sybrina Fulton, 48, rarely grants interviews, but she told me last week that under current "stand your ground" laws, accountability is lost. Several cases show that if you kill the person because you claim you feared for your life, then you have a good chance to walk. But if you fire a warning shot to protect yourself, you could face up to 60 years in prison.

That's absurd; we need some common sense here.

Fulton said since her son was killed, she doesn't sleep much and her life has been flipped upside down. Before Feb. 26, 2012, Fulton said, she was just a "regular mom" who worked for the Miami Dade Housing Agency by developing educational programs for people living in Section 8 housing.

"My life was regular. I lived in a regular house, drove a regular car and my life was my kids. We took one vacation a year and worked hard," she said. "But after my son was killed, my family was thrust into the national spotlight."

Martin, 17, was walking to his father's home in Sanford, Fla., when he was approached, followed and later killed by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman. Zimmerman thought Martin "looked suspicious."

The title and first sentence do not work. The trayvon martin case was not about stand your ground. It was about shooting someone on top of you beating your face in.

“.......fire a warning shot”.

Sounds like she swallowed Biden’s idea hook, line and sinker.

““.......fire a warning shot”.”

If I recall they just changed the warning shot law in Florida. Although you could defend yourself using the stand your ground law by shooting the perp dead, you could not fire a warning shot. If you did, they could (and frequently did) prosecute you for it. The change clarified this as okay.

She didn’t mention the “normal” life of having to send your kid halfway across the state to live with his father because she couldn’t handle the monster she created.

His liver was in an advanced state of deterioration because he was doing “lean” or “purple drank” which affects the body the same as PCP.

When PCP was the “rage” years ago, we who remember those days also remember the super human violent tendencies of those who were high on it as well.

That is the reality she was living but has now been co-opted by the race pimps as just another useful idiot.

Great. So now you can fire a warning shot, the bullet goes half a mile and kills some innocent person.

“So now you can fire a warning shot, the bullet goes half a mile and kills some innocent person.”

In the cases I’m familiar with, they were fired into the ground. I carry a .380 with Glaser ammo for that very reason. The bullet will not penetrate walls and won’t ricochet.

I retired my larger caliber guns for that reason.

"But after my son was killed, my family was thrust into the national spotlight."

But .... sure seems to me like she's doing everything she can to stay in that damn spotlight - CNN guest (multiple times), speaking at rallies, interviews, man for she's everywhere now!

Gotta act while people still remember Skittles, I guess ...

That warning shot case was also right here in Jacksonville. Wanna guess who went after this woman with the full weight of the law and put her in jail for 60 years?

You got it, none other than Angela Corey.

As stated in the first response to you, the woman convicted by Corey is getting a new trial and the Florida legislature has worked on reversing the letter of the law that Corey used to convict her.

Over a 1/3 of sucessful stand your ground cases in Florida involve black folks. You eliminate stand your ground and those folks would be incarcerated. they make up what? 11% of the population.
Lets change laws without looking at rationale...cripes we are so doomed.

>>she was just a “regular mom” who worked for the Miami Dade Housing Agency by developing educational programs for people living in Section 8 housing.

We are living a Kafkaesque existence when a woman who was clearly unable to properly raise her own son is entrusted with educating others in how to live their lives.

Thank you, Big Government, for all you do.

Sybrina should have taught her son not to pound folks’ heads on the pavement. When her son pounded a head on the pavement, he got shot. Justice, right there.

Correct. Prior the SYG though you had to retreat as far as you possibly could before you could defend yourself. Out the back window of the house, drive to the next county, get on a plane, leave the state. Who decides if you’re in fear for your life? You do. These asshats act like folks WANT to go out and pop some miscreants. I’d be willing to say that for the most part, nobody WANTS to be put in this position if at all possible. Just more lack of understanding of the word ‘responsibility”. Plus I’m sure she’s(tres-gone’s mom) getting a stipend from the MAIGgots or moms lookin’ for a little “action” or some other “gun safety advocate group”(i.e. gun control nazis). Either way it’s a payday for someone who was useless as far as parenting goes.
P.S. Ever see cops fire “warning shots”? Only in the movies because they know that doesn’t work.

She is right. We do need change. While I don’t believe in warning shots, nobody should get 60 years for doing so.

Agreed on the propaganda.

And, BTW, ‘warning shots’ should ALWAYS be center mass.

Just sayin’

The first thing that needs to be clarified is which party ‘stood their ground’.
Martin or Zimmerman.
If the argument is Zimmerman ‘stood’ then Martin was the aggressor.
That would blow holes in the entire ‘poor little victim’ argument.
