On Tuesday, Jon Stewart attempted to "slay" arguments regarding food stamp fraud on The Daily Show. In the video, Stewart spoke about the supposed hypocrisy of conservatives criticizing food stamp usage using a collection of Fox News videos.
When taken at face value, the comments may actually seem quite hypocritical. However, Stewart misses the real point: some items that can be purchased with SNAP ("food stamps") completely lack nutritional value, or are "luxury" foods like lobsters, steak, and organic salmon that don't really present an economically-friendly meal choice for someone who has trouble paying for food without government assistance. Also, Stewart didn't mention the fact that "food stamps" are actually referred to now as SNAP funds--SNAP being an acronym that stands for "Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program." The program is not intended nor designed to cover an entire food budget.
Taxpayers should be upset that their well-intentioned dollars to prevent the poor from starvation are able to be spent on unhealthy food. That's the real controversy.
Grocery stores already label foods that qualify for WIC.
I have seen a woman with a full cart end up paying $0.00 after handing over a bunch of what resembled checks (WIC) that paid for each item .
He and Bill Maher have the same audience. Barking clapping seals who cheer anything these two douchebags say. Anything.
Jon who?
Imho, too few of them learn right and wrong from their parents. They grow up without a method of discerning morality or truth.

I think you are right about that.
Stoned idiot college kids think Stewart’s show is “news”.
Hey, I've got a 55 year old younger brother who earnestly believes that if I watch Stewart and Colbert, the "truth" as he sees it will be revealed to me. I will quit all my conservative positions and happily embrace the enlightened liberal agenda.
I keep telling him that when I was younger I used to believe a lot of that lib bs. about big gov. being good. I've seen Stewart's and Colbert's shows. They spread the same lib bs the libs were spreading forty years ago. I can't get my brother to understand that more gov. is not necessarily good gov. I'd like to send him my copy of Hayek's "The Road To Serfdom," but he'd probably throw it in the trash without reading it.
He didn’t “DESTROY” the allegations?
I’m old enough to remember the “commodities food” program in the 70s. One did not get stamps or a card you got a box of basic food. Five pound brick of cheese (great cheese btw), noodles, canned chicken, beans etc. Filling, nutritious and free.
Under SNAP I have been behind people with a cart full of chips, dip, maybe some frozen dinners. Others have a cart loaded with high dollar steaks when they should be buying hamburger (like me). BTW, the steak people are probably going to hit a bar and sell the steaks about half price for cash. Barkeep has seen this.
Providing a good nutritional floor for the poor is one thing: giving them a gov’t credit card to spend on whatever is ridiculous.
I posted this in response to acclaim the great Jon Stewart was getting for this and received no reply: http://www.kirotv.com/videos/news/ebt-cards-being-used-at-medical-marijuana/vq27f/
EBT Food Stamp System Crash: “How Am I Going to Feed My Family?”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VW-0xJb_FM4
“How come NOBODY talks about the food price inflation that occurs for the rest of us non food stamp users? Because food stamps artificially increase demand.”
Because that might make a Democrat look bad, and as you know, that simply isn’t allowed in the US Media anymore.
“This is how the left propagandizes the citizenry. A comedy channel has a comedian offering disinformation to those (often/mostly younger people) who dont follow real news.”
The really sad part is that this is now the PRIMARY news source for males 18-50....
“Stewart is nothing but a mouth piece for the low brows that think he is the real media. Another ass clown for the left.”
His task is to keep younger ignorant whites in the Dem column in terms of votes; he has had some success. I work with white low-information voters who watch his program as “news” (despite the fact that it is on The Comedy Channel).
“The really sad part is that this is now the PRIMARY news source for males 18-50...”
I work with plenty of childless white females aged 40 to 60 who get their “news” from him as well.
Thanks for this thread.
During THE GREAT DEPRESSION of the 1930’s, FDR had his Breadlines for millions of Americans.
During THE GREAT RECESSION, Soetoro-Obama has his Food Stamp Lines for millions of Americans.
FDR’s Depression ended with 20% National unemployment.
Soetoro-Obama’s Recession now has 21% true National unemployment.
FDR cut back on Military spending during his Great Depression.
Soetoro-Obama has been cutting back on Military spending during his Great Recession.
FDR instituted the mandatory Master/Slave Entitlement called Social Security.
Soetoro-Obama instituted the mandatory Master/Slave Entitlement called Obamacare.
FDR and Soetoro-Obama fairly represent the Democrat values of their respective times, IMHO, of course.
Individual grocery stores shouldn’t have to put forth the effort to make that distinction. It’s the government’s program, they should have to do it. It’s something they’ve supposedly tried, but it was too expensive and wasteful to make the distinction. Whatever the issue, the amount paid out by SNAP is absolutely luxurious. I spent the better part of 2012 on SNAP and we never ate better.
Governments can force food stores to identify which items fall under sales tax and which don't. Why should this be different? And how else are you going to do it with any accuracy other than through the point-of-sale system?
