Rep. Justin Amash slammed for abortion vote in GOP challenger's first $75K TV ad

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Businessman Brian Ellis unleashed his first television advertisement against U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, calling a single 2012 abortion vote "very wrong."

The 30-second spot attacks Amash, R-Cascade Township, as being the only Michigan Republican voting against the 2012 Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act, which reportedly would have imprisoned doctors for performing abortions based solely on gender.

The bill failed in the House with a vote of 246-168 in favor. It needed 276 yeas to pass.

"Amash voted to allow gender selection abortions to continue," the ad states. "Right to Life called Amash's vote 'shameful' and 'pro-abortion.' They're right. Amash's vote was very wrong."

In response, Amash's campaign called the ad "despicable, disgusting and beyond the pale" in the run up to the August primary election.

Amash is a hero to many tea partiers, but I have a real problem with three of his votes. This is the biggest, followed by his vote against national reciprocity. I don't like his Keystone vote either.

I'm not sure about Brian Ellis either. Regardless, I don't vote in his district.

Let's not fall into cults of personalities about politicians. They aren't saints. Even those who say the right things and talk about the constitution all the time aren't perfect.

Another problem with Amash was his bizarre defense of the psychotic nutjob dictator of Iran when McCain (of all people) made a joke about him. He needs to go.

For the people in the Amash district. I haven't followed him too closely.

Amash is a libertarian. I want to see him gone, but from what I’ve heard, the other guy is an establishment douchebag. After Mitch McConnell’s recent comments, I am NEVER supporting these thugs again.

I never understood the thrill for Amash that so many Freepers have or had.

He's a libertarians and libertarians are not generally strong on the pro life cause (or national defense).

He's anti-establishment. That automatically makes him a hero to many.

It's "go team" vs "right policy" and "best way to obtain it."

Unfortunately, this is also the OWS approach.

You're right...too many don't have logic and a credible plan as their motivation.

Amash’s kool-aid drinking worshipers will claim he “HAD TO” vote with Nancy Pelosi 477 times for “constitutional” reasons. Somehow, the “constitution” forces him to vote to allow abortion for gender selection and a bunch of other liberal stuff. I must have missed that section but I’m sure the enlightened Paulbots know better than us.

Ah, but that same crowd claims all incumbents are AUTOMATICALLY bad and need to be challenged in the primary by "someone" because they're not "entitled" to another term and "three terms is enough for anyone".

By definition they get behind Amash's challenger (regardless of who he is) and point out: "We've had enough professional politicians. Justin Amash has had three terms now in two different legislative bodies and has nothing to show for it. How many terms are politicians like Amash entitled to? Its time for him to go or be pushed" ;-)

This is where me and the libertarians part ways. Abortion and border security. There’s nothing “pro-choice” about abortion, no compromising. If a candidate is not pro-life, he is off my list. I don’t care how strong he is on other issues.

He is much better than Vern Ehlers and the EGR RINO that’s running ads.

Conservative groups give Amash top honors

Club for Growth, Heritage Action laud Amash for conservative votes

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) received top honors from two conservative groups this week. Club for Growth named Amash a “Defender of Economic Freedom” for 2013, while Heritage Action gave Amash the top score in the Michigan delegation.

“I’ve made it my mission since the first day in office to defend the Constitution and advance individual liberty,” said Amash. “I’m honored that my work over the last three years has been recognized by every conservative group that tracks Congress.”

Amash was one of 22 representatives to receive Club for Growth’s annual Defender of Economic Freedom award. He is one of only two members currently serving in the House to have a lifetime score of 100 percent from the group. The award is given to congressmen who consistently vote for lower taxes, less spending, fewer regulations, and school choice, among other free market issues.

“Congress looks for any excuse to spend our tax dollars and grow government, but in 2013, the people of Michigan’s Third District had Justin Amash standing up for them in Washington,” said Club for Growth President Chris Chocola. “If we had more pro-economic growth fighters like Justin Amash serving in Congress today, America would be a better place.”

Heritage Action, affiliated with the conservative Heritage Foundation, this week released its 2013 review of congressional votes as well. For the third year in a row, Amash ranked as its top congressman in the Michigan delegation.

In every previous year as a congressman, Amash has won FreedomWorks’s “FreedomFighter” award and the National Taxpayers Union’s “Taxpayers’ Friend” award. Those organizations will announce their awards for 2013 later this year.

What kind of bill requires 276 votes to pass? Was it a constitutional amendment or something?

Thanks cc. Amash doesn’t belong in office, except perhaps in the PA or Gaza.

Conservatism is a three-legged stool: free market principles, strong national security and traditional values.

If Amash gets good marks on the first peg, but sucks on the other two, he's not a "true conservative", sorry. 1 out of 3 is unacceptable. And he's certainly not better than the "RINO" running against him who holds mainstream conservative values on all three. If anything, Amash is a RINO. Do not pretend small government libertarian and Reagan conservative are interchangeable terms.

Amash is a Paultarded d-bag and anyone who thinks he’s a hero rides to school on the shortbus.

It was a “suspension of the rules,” which requires 2/3 of the vote to pass. Given that Obama (who never has met an abortion he didn’t kike) surely would have vetoed the bill, 2/3 would have been needed eventually anyhow (to override the veto); Amash showed that, as to be expected from Paultards like him, he stands with abortionists. He claims to be pro-life because he voted against public funding of abortion under Obamacare? LOL! Just about every pro-abortion Republican also voted to ban such public funding; Amash’s voting record is less pro-life than that of “pro-choice” Republicans Lance, Granger, Jenkins, etc.

Justin Amash is not a conservative, he ‘s a Paultard (I normally prefer the word “Paulistinian,” but since Amash is of Palestinian descent I wouldn’t want to be misinterpreted). He sucks at the teat of the L. Ron Paul cult, and votes in the way he figures that Ron Paul would. Amash is far from a social conservative—he refused to vote to defund Planned Parenthood, and then he voted against a bill to ban sex-selection abortions. Amash goes a step further than even Ron Paul in his support for Iran’s dangerous and anti-Semitic regime, opposing any U.S. efforts to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons and becoming Ahmadinejad’s biggest cheerleader and sycophant in Congress; his voting record is reflexively anti-national security, anti-Israel and pro-Islamist terrorist. And like all true Paulbots, he is soft on protecting the border against illegal immigration; I don’t believe that Amash has of yet parroted Ron Paul’s call for legalizing heroin, but give him time. Amash is a true RINO and CINO, running as a Republican and claiming to be a conservative solely because he knows that if he ran as a Libertarian Party candidate he would lose.

It is risible that Amash is seen as a hero by those who decry “career politicians,” given that Amash is the closest thing to a career politician in Congress (at least among those with an R next to his name): he ran for office soon after graduating from law school (I think his experience working in the private sector were a few months helping out at his family business and a year as a corporate lawyer), being elected to the state house as a 28-year-old and then conning MI-03 voters into electing him to Congress as a 30-year-old, where he’s been ever since.

As far as I’m concerned, Justin Amash can ask for donations from his Iranian and Islamist friends and from Paulbots; he does not deserve a dime from conservatives, even if his Club for Growth rating is 100. Conservatives in the Grand Rapids area have had enough of Amash’s antics, and, God willing, he’ll get voted out later this year in the GOP primary. I wish that Republicans in Brazoria County had rid us of Ron Paul 30 years ago and we could have avoided his anti-Semitic, anti-family cult infiltrating our party.

Amash is a Liberaltarian, and every one of them are a turd in the punch bowl.

They can’t win being truthful and putting that ‘L’ after their name, so they infect the GOP with their nonsense.

Excellent points all around, especially with the double standard from the conservatives screaming that all incumbents are bad and are not "entitled" to another term, so they need to be challenged in the primary every election cycle.

So has anyone heard from the "we've had enough career politicians/he's had three terms and nothing to show for it/its time for him to go or be pushed/his conservative ratings are trending downward" crowd on this? Mark Levin? Erick Erickson? Have ANY of them endorsed Amash's primary opponent?

Yet they sure were gung ho and outspoken about removing much MORE conservative incumbents like Mike Enzi and Pat Roberts.

Interesting, isn't it?
