An airliner disappears without a trace over water, vanishing from radar without a Mayday or witness to its final fatal moments.
As searchers continue to look for the Malaysia Airlines flight that failed to reach its destination last weekend with 239 on board, there's an eerily similar mystery that's much closer to home — the unsolved fate of Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 2501, which crashed into Lake Michigan in 1950.
At the time, Northwest 2501 was the worst commercial aviation disaster in U.S. history with 58 people lost. Though debris and body parts were found, the wreckage is still somewhere in Lake Michigan.
Valerie van Heest and a dedicated group of volunteers have spent a decade searching for the sunken fuselage and engines of the DC-4.
"Initially our desire was to solve one of Lake Michigan's greatest mysteries, but then for me it changed once I met the first few relatives of the victims," van Heest said in a phone interview from her Michigan home. "It became an effort to provide closure to those families still waiting after more than six decades."

A B-25 went down in the Monongahela River near Pittsburgh in 1956. It was never recovered. And the water is less than 20 feet deep!
In 1956 it would have cost more to retrieve the B-25 than it was worth. By 1956 it was just another old WWII surplus airplane.

There is methane under the earth’s crust. Methane is lighter than air. Sometimes a large bubble of methane flatulates out of a crack in the crust, sometimes under water. (You may have seen something like this while taking a bath...) If a plane or ship happen to be over the bubble, they immediately sink because there’s nothing to hold them up. Starting to get the picture? So the plane or ship are suddenly underwater and there’s no sign of where they went. It’s not like when they crash on land. So that’s my take on this and the bermuda triangle too.
