Austal is an Australian owned company that operates a shipyard in Alabama so it can build for the US Navy (it also builds for the civil market, but requirements for USN work is the primary reason for having a US based shipyard). It employs a few thousand Americans there, and makes money for an Australian business at the same time.

Win-win.

More LCSs? Unarmed sports cars....

These sleek, fast, shallow-draft Centerboard Schooners will give our enemies fits, Ryan. No longer will they be able to sneak out of Key West with loads of contraband cotton!

And, my good fellow, rest assured the new ships shall be far from unarmed. Every man jack and lesbian of the crew shall be equipped with a brace of Colt Navy Pistols and a razor-sharp cutlass. As for cannon, no more muzzle-loading bronze dinosaurs, for our Navy! No Sirree Bob! Each shall have cast-steel Dahlgren and Parrot breech-loaders throwing a fearsome weight of broadside.

Why very soon, our Navy shall have more ships than admirals!

They are also easily convertible to some other purpose.

The ships, or the admirals? The Navy has a new role ... Social Justice and Equal Opportunity for a diverse group of young sailors and sailor-ettes. For this purpose, environmentally sensitive sailing vessels, with their minimal carbon footprint, might actually be preferable.
