SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A 5-alarm fire is burning at a high-rise building under construction on 4th Street near China Basin in San Francisco. The blaze was reported at 4:56 p.m. at Fourth and China Basin streets. The building is reportedly apartments that were set to open in a few months. The property that is burning does not belong to the nearby University of California at San Francisco, a UCSF spokeswoman said. San Francisco Fire Department spokesperson Mindy Talmadge says there is a lot of radiant heat coming from the burning building. Firefighters have decided to pull back from the fire due to concerns about collapse. Shortly after 6 p.m., part of the building appeared to collapse in on itself.

There were no initial reports of injuries.
The four-alarm fire that began about 5 p.m. was ravaging a high-rise building under construction and moving down a block.
Fire-suppression systems had not yet been installed in the building, making the battle against the blaze more difficult, Fire Department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said.

Welding torch?
Hmmm. I don't remember hearing that today was a "Scare the Air" day. :)
That said, there is a high wind warning in effect for the Bay Area tonight. Let's hope SF's bravest can get this inferno mostly under control before sundown (about 7:15PM).
Might be but nothing reported yet from what I’ve seen as the cause...since a new building not yet completed some investor is not going to be a happy camper!
So?
What is going in is commuter BUSES belonging to financially healthy companies arrive in these neighborhoods to take young, well-paid programmers, etc. to companies in Silicon Valley.
The buses enable well-paid people to bid up the rents or restaurant bills of establishments that the outspoken, blue-haired, nipple-ring set naturally see as “belonging to them”.
In other cases the companies are located in that very neighborhood.
This is simply the envy and violence of the lefty poor/angry directed against people who actually STUDIED in college, instead of going to rallies.
They want to be cool in college, but also cool now, i.e. PAID as well as techno/engineering people.
The walk along the waterfront from AT&T Park, just to the north, to the Ferry Building is pure delight.
i have an interesting question.what %% of the contracters/carpenters were legal/illegal?
well, didnt California Libs blame all fires on Global Warming?
It almost Chinatown you know what the cops said in the movie Chinatown Great movie
This is Chinatown LOL!
WHOA I didn’t see that part KNBC LA show it live for while
“That passes for a high rise in San Francisco? There are buildings more than twice that tall in Frisco, Texas.”
It’s on the waterfront! Tallest buildings in SF are over 50 stories. It’s an apartment complex. Building covers 4acres.
appears to be no longer smoking up the bay. Those were mostly just shells still under construction.
Trust me give them time it early LOL!
3 2 1
Westfield, MA won’t let anyone build over 4 stories last I knew.
Wow—what is fueling that fire?
It’s a building under construction. Assuming it has concrete floors and it has not progressed to the point where sprinkler systems are built and active, seems like an awfully large fire.
Walls would be steel studs and drywall. If sprinklers are not in, the ceilings are not in, and they would be either drywall or suspended tile.
Just seems like a big fire, and a big fire requires big fuel to burn.

True. Potrero Hill used to be a ghetto all the way down to Army St (excuse me, Cesar Chavez Blvd). Now all of the city housing there has been torn down and the whole 3rd St Corridor is being reborn as high-end residential property. The earthquake had the salutary effect of making mandatory the tearing down of the Embarcadero Freeway (that went nowhere). It was a “gift” to the city by Gov. Jerry the Fairy’s father Fat Pat Brown. The CA/SF haters may not like SF, but it sure is a beautiful place.
FWOOMP!
Probably an insurance job...
Amazing what is seen as breaking news....
Of course, every story on CNN and Fox etc., now are breaking news too...
Yes, I was looking at the same picture. Wood framing on a high rise? Can’t imagine doing that—in an apartment building no less.
CA has all kinds of fire safety rules and flammability ratings for furnishings and materials.
Maybe we are not seeing wood materials there?
I don’t recognize the green cladding material either.
