SAN ANTONIO — Texas roadside megastore Buc-ee's found itself in between two political powerhouses Tuesday after the chain's owners offered their support to state Sen. Dan Patrick.
Following a photo and announcement of the owners' support on Facebook Monday, Congressman Joaquin Castro said he would no longer shop at Buc-ee's “since they support a fear mongering immigrant basher.”
“I am disappointed to learn that a popular and well-respected retailer would lend its corporate brand to a candidate for statewide office who has built his career around dividing Texans and bashing immigrants, solely for his own political gain,” Castro said in a written statement.
Tweets from Castro vowing to boycott the Texas convenience store made the rounds on social media and included similar promises from supporters, including Joaquin Castro's mother, Rosie Castro.
Buc-ee's officials made clear the owners of the chain are the ones supporting Patrick, not the corporation itself.
“As a company, Buc-ee's does not support political candidates,” said Jeff Nalado, general counsel for Buc-ee's. “Buc-ee's owners, Don Wasek and Beaver Aplin have contributed to the campaign of Dan Patrick. Buc-ee's doors are open 24/7 to everyone.”
Patrick, a Houston Republican candidate for lieutenant governor, posted a photo posing with Aplin, Wasek, and the company's Beaver mascot on Facebook Sunday along with an announcement of their support.

Without ever reading a single quote about this guy or even knowing who he is or what he stands for, I am willing to bet $20 to Free Republic if anyone can show me this person ever said anything derogatory about LEGAL immigrants.

That’s cool. And I’m free to boycott San Antonio due to their religious intolerance and race-baiting.
I now avoid San Antonio because it is full of criminal invaders. Quite a shame since there are many fine restaurants there that I love to frequent.
