Meanwhile, in a real life scenario, the king wouldn't be standing idly in the background smiling vacantly during the wedding; he'd be ranting about the continuation of the family line for obvious reasons.

The best that 'the bravest knight who ever lived' would hope for is to be the prince's mistress. The more likely scenario would be a reenactment of this scene from Braveheart.

But we can't have reality intruding, now can we?

Yes, what they really mean by “happens to be gay” is that likely both the prince and the knight were buggered by pedophiles at a young age. Wish they would start adding this to the narrative.
