Neither Abraham Lincoln nor FDR come back from the grave could've defeated LBJ that year just months after the "martyrdom" of JFK in Dallas. Terrible example.

In addition, Goldwater was a reluctant candidate, his campaign staff was inept, and the party's establishment, with the exception of Richard Nixon, sat out the campaign after he won the nomination. A bad example, indeed.
