Obama wants overtime pay for more salaried workers

WASHINGTON (AP) — Bypassing Congress, President Barack Obama intends to order changes in overtime rules so employers would be required to pay millions more workers for the extra time they put in on the job.

The rules, which would not likely take effect until 2015, are aimed at workers currently designated as supervisory employees but who are exempt from overtime because they get paid a salary of more than $455 a week. Obama plans to order his Labor Department to recommend regulations that would increase that salary threshold and change the definition of what constitutes a supervisor.

Obama's attention to overtime dovetails with his emphasis on correcting wage disparities, a theme that he has said will be central to the remainder of his presidential term. It also serves his political ends during a midterm election year, giving him a populist issue along with his calls for a higher minimum wage and better pay for women.

President Barack Obama intends to order changes in overtime rules ....... Obama plans to order his Labor Department....

He can shove his orders. This is NOT his purview, and that Congress and the media are sitting around mutely like cigar store Indians as he tramples all over constitutional order is unbelievable.

Any time I see something like this coming from comrade obama I have to remind myself that however beneficial it may at first appear on the surface for the average employee, he’s only doing it because it means increased tax revenue for the Fed. Somebody has to pay for all those IRS salaries and executive office vacations.

Two things will happen if Obumbler gets this through.

1) Many of those workers falling into this category will LOST THEIR JOBS.

2) Many of those remaining workers will HAVE THEIR HOURS CUT in order to eliminate the overtime pay requirements.

Your points are so true. Obama is a domestic enemy. He wants to destroy the private sector. All part of the destroy America and grow government plan. Cloward-Piven and all. When are Americans going to wake up? We took an oath to protect America from all enemies, foreign and domestic. I hope the voter turnout in November is a tsunami. Remember in November! Remember this and thousands of other things. . . Something every day.

At this rate, will there be any votes for a democrat on November 4th?

Interesting that a black “reporter” fired from Politico who was “forced” to work in retail, writes a column about people not being paid overtime then Obama uses his executive authority to do something about it. Whatever he can do.

Most places I worked the attitude was “You’re salary and therefor cheap”.

I have done jobs typically done by hourly people, in order for the company to save money on overtime. I also left those companies, but they continue the same practice.

It cuts both ways.

Since President MomJeans doesn't know a thing about economics, it's quite obvious that he's somebody's Muppet on this one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Muppets

Operation

The puppeteer, often dubbed as the "Muppet performer"or "Muppeteer", holds the Muppet above his head or in front of his body, with one hand operating the head and mouth and the other manipulating the hands and arms, either with two separate control rods or by "wearing" the hands like gloves. One consequence of this design is that most Muppets are left-handed as the puppeteer uses his right hand to operate the head while operating the arm rod with his left hand. There are many other common designs and means of operation. In advanced Muppets, several Muppeteers may control a single character; the performer who controls the mouth usually provides the voice for the character. As technology has evolved, the Jim Henson team and other puppeteers have developed an enormous variety of means to operate Muppets for film and television, including the use of suspended rigs, [TELEPROMPTERS], internal motors, remote radio control, and computer enhanced and superimposed images.

So, do you tell the Muppet to shut up, or do you tell the Muppeteer to shut up? A fascinating question...

How can any President simply declare a wage increase for millions of workers?

Good God, this country reminds me more and more of Argentina or Bolivia every day.

Yikes, I just read in the newspaper this morning that it was 960ish a week and under. Anybody making under 500 a week and in a supervisory position better be making sure they aren’t exempt - if they don’t, it’s their own fault for negotiating horrible conditions for that low of a salary and to also be exempt from overtime..

“A “salaried job” has a distinct definition. For one thing they don’t punch a clock. For another, in many cases their lunch is “paid” if you go by an 8 hr day (i.e. 9-5 with an hour lunch is only 7 hrs).”

I don’t know if it is a generational gap (I’m in my mid-40s), but the 9-5 jobs are disappearing (and have been for some time). 9 to 5 has been replaced with 8:30 to 5:00 for many “salaried” people, and this started decades ago (and is one reason why I have no problem with an overhaul of the current system). “Salaried” has simply become a way for a company to squeeze the work of five out or four people cheaply; anyone who has consistently been forced to work unpaid overtime would understand. I got an extra raise when I first became a supervisor because I could make the case in numbers that I would have been better off under the previous salary arrangement, and have had countless others say the same. I work with “supervisors” and “managers” with no staff just to eliminate overtime pay; it is a regression to ten hour workdays six days a week. Anyone who says “switch jobs” is oversimplifying it; they are among the few who feel compensated fairly (for the record, I have been compensated fairly since I stopped working unpaid overtime). Once the abuse is systemic, then few jobs offer shelter from it.

When the employers hold all the cards, the workers simply vote for Obamunism. While misguided and destructive, you will never convince them to do otherwise.
