KEYWORDS:
Guerrero was serving a life prison sentence at the time in connection with an armed bank robbery. Prosecutors say under a plea agreement, he will receive another life term.
That will teach him not to do that again. Couldn't we just execute him twice?

If there is no death penalty, then there is nothing to stop murderers from committing more murders while in prison.

An inmate has pleaded guilty to murder in the stabbing death of a guard at a federal prison in Central California.Yes, it was a federal prison. I was working at a California state prison at the time. We had one killed at Cal Institute for men, in 2005, the last one previous to that, was at San Quentin, in 1985. That is two too many, but there have not been that many really bad things happen. I was assaulted twice in my 25 years, but no serious problems. The worst was the infamous incident at San Quentin in 1971. That was real bad.

He just invested in the prospect of the next 40 years of life in the prison version of luxury: His own cell with several amenities, free health, dental and shrink care, all the sex change surgery he can want, fleets of flunky lawyers rushing to do his bidding, and the knowledge that he’ll die not from the needle but from a very comfortable old age.

We were always bitter that the inmates got better health care than we did.

You might be interested to know that a petition is circulating, propelled by the DA of Riverside County, for a ballot proposition to reform the entire death penalty process. This includes radically shortening the time for appeals, the number of appeals, changing the courts that review the appeals, and abolishing death row, placing those pampered inmates among the mainline population throughout California prisons.
