China's top envoy to Germany has warned the West against punishing Russia with sanctions for its intervention in Ukraine, saying such measures could lead to a dangerous chain reaction that would be difficult to control.
In an interview with Reuters days before the European Union is threatening to impose its first sanctions on Russia since the Cold War, ambassador Shi Mingde issued the strongest warning against such measures by any top Chinese official to date.
"We don't see any point in sanctions," Shi said. "Sanctions could lead to retaliatory action, and that would trigger a spiral with unforeseeable consequences. We don't want this."
German Chancellor Angela Merkel...Using her toughest rhetoric since the crisis began, she warned in a speech in parliament on Thursday that Russia risked "massive" political and economic damage if it did not change course in the coming days.
Russia's Deputy Economy Minister Alexei Likhachev responded by promising "symmetrical" sanctions by Moscow.
Still, Ukraine presents Beijing with a dilemma. On the one hand it is a traditional ally of Moscow and has routinely sided with its northern neighbor in major international conflicts. On the other hand, the question of territorial integrity is a tricky issue for the Chinese because of Tibet and Taiwan.

Thats the problem. The cool heads are in Russia and China. They can be cool about it and just press forward knowing they hold ALL the cards.
We on the other hand have a senile Manchurian Candidate and a closet case advising a White house led by a Muslim activist and a Ketchup Gigolo..
It’s literally true. And we have fallen so far as to have empowered both solely for the sake of not being called bad names by liberals.
Hope the planet was worth it.
Fear not! we have just gutted our military and their benefits. Oh wait...
I think all of you are forgetting one thing.
Take the politics away and our military can kick both their a$$e$ across the continents.
Not at all. I know they could. But they wont without an order to do it.
McCain and Ghramm make noise but when faced with nuclear retaliation, they will be first in the bunker. Obama won’t let the military shoot terrorists shooting at them. He will never let our mil kick anyones ass.
Chinese are worried that a big sanctions move against the russians in the crimea will set up a big sanctions move against them for the incursions into the the south and east china seas.
You’ll need to take away the politics + the nukes
The first casualty of a potential east-west conflict will be “Free Trade”. I say halleluiah to that. Free Traitors can go hide under the rocks or GTHO, go live with your Asian handlers.
Another ahem...’casualty’ will be the UN and the EU as power blocs. I won’t miss that either.
Nobody is going to nuke anyone. Did we use nukes Korea, VietNam, China or Iraq? Nagasaki was the last and only nuke to be used in wartime.
That's why they're there.
I doubt China or Russia have many worries right now.
Wars and rumors of wars.
Hitler had tons of nerve gas and a perfect deliver system, V-1 and V-2 rockets, and NEVER used them. Even when surrounded by the Red Army in 1945. It just isn’t going to happen.
All they have to do is threaten it and every lib on earth will throw themselves down in submission. Guaranteed. Sure they will make noise. But they will quickly start condemning anyone who resists in the name of ‘peace’.
EU and American sanctions could lead to a shortage of artisen breads, perfume, Hollywood movies and gourmet beverages in Russia. Everything else, including GM cars is made in China.
Never underestimate your enemy. Sometime in the future nukes will definitely be used.
