Suit seeks removal of Bladensburg cross
Washington Post ^ | 03/01/2014 | Michael E. Ruane

The American Humanist Association filed a lawsuit last week in federal court in Maryland calling for the removal of Bladensburg’s 40-foot Memorial Peace Cross, which honors men from Prince George’s County who died during World War I.

The association and three individual plaintiffs contend that the cross, which is on state property, violates the constitutional principle of separation of church and state. The cross was dedicated in 1925.

...One of the individual plaintiffs, Steven Lowe of Washington, contends that the cross "associates a Christian religious symbol with the state and gives the impression that the state supports and approves of Christianity, as opposed to other religions," the suit says.

I've driven past this cross on a couple of occasion on the way to nearby Hyattsville.

These "freethinkers" dishonor and desecrate the memory of the honored dead. They should be resisted to the last breath.

A letter writer put it best in the Post:

..."Since its dedication in 1925, it has become part of the cultural foundation and unity of all people. To remove it would be a travesty. This would be as blatant an act of religious destruction as the Taliban's demolition in Afghanistan of two of the largest Buddhas in the world."

Well, these militant atheists have the same mindset as the Taliban do. Not surprising to see this brought up.

Amen. It’s so beautiful. Only a black and shriveled soul could hate it.

It’s not so much the “freethinkers” who distance our country from God but those who have the last voice in these matters — the deciding judges.

Anybody who’d want to remove the Peace Cross needs to be handed over to the nearest psycho ward on a permanent basis.

He is exactly correct. This is a Christian nation founded on Christian principles. Too bad that he hates God.

...and gives the impression that the state supports and approves of Christianity, as opposed to other religions...

Faulty logic You could just as easily say that it gives the impression that the State affirms the right to religious expression.

In addition, ATHEISTS HAVE NO STANDING.

Atheism is NOT a religion, by definition.

The plaintif may as well sue the State of Maryland to change its name while he's at it.

It appears to endorse the mother of that C-word guy.

These atheists are perhaps sometimes not reacting against what Christianity actually is supposed to be, but against how hypocrites propound it.

Christianity has lost its “first love” all too often. And yielding to the siren song of government usurpation (the original reason for not letting government intrude on faith) has hastened this process.

There’s nothing to do but to embrace a loving Lord once more and then share that extra special love directly. Don’t “let George do it.” Do it yourselves.

Maryland actually got its name from another Mary, the wife of a king for whom the territory was named in honor.

Virginia is a better reference to the Virgin Mary.

I do not mind Atheists. As Jefferson said, they “neither break my leg nor pick my pocket.” But when they try to force their religion on the rest of us, then I have a problem. The militant Atheists must be opposed, just like the militant Muslims.

Is Steven Lowe of Washington an atheist?

What a jerk!

Ain't HE going to be in for a giant SURPRISE when he meets our Lord?

Steven Lowe isn't taliban as the taliban BELIEVE that God in on their side. Lowe is living in his own little godless world where he doesn't want God to exist.

The Taliban and Lowe will get their day before the Lord.

Do these groups do anything besides suing to get rid of crosses on public land? Anything at all?

He and his associates do believe, though, like the Taliban, that their destruction (intended in this case) is justified by their ideology.

The fact is that there is no establishment of Religion by putting up a cross. What Religion would it be????? Baptist? Catholic? Presbyterian?

This whole Marxist thing is to destroy the meaning of words. They are destroying “Rule of Law” by making up stuff in the Constitution that is NOT there. There is Freedom OF Religion.....and they are ONLY censoring Christianity out of the public square——not Satanism which is the promotion of sodomy and they use the White House to promote that Religious Rite and use our “Justice” system to force sodomy rites (Satanism) on people.

Atheism is as much of a ‘faith” as Christianity-—Fact is, no cross is forcing the Atheist religion on us.

The free expression of Religion includes in the “public” square and that Freedom is in the first Amendment and the Supreme Law. It is historical and Traditional....in American Jurisprudence......can’t separate Religion from the people, anyhow, without censorship of speech, which is NOT ALLOWED!!

It is time to put Christianity back in the place it was at the Founding....it is the only Rational religion which is in line with Natural Law Theory and our Justice (ethical) System.

Lol. Boy is HE in for a surprise when he finds out that, in Arabic, Jesus is "ISSA" and there are TONS of stores named after "Issa" all over the country.

The Saudi Muslims respected ISSA very much as a wonderful prophet, miracle worker and man.

Boy, will Lowe ever feel LOW when he learns THAT. Sorry, I couldn't resist!
