Europe starts food fight with U.S. over cheese names
LA Times ^ | 3-12-14 | AP story

Errico Auricchio produced cheese with his family in Italy until he brought his trade to the United States more than 30 years ago. Now the European Union is saying his cheese isn't authentic enough to carry a European name.

As part of trade talks, the EU wants to ban the use of names like Parmesan, feta and Gorgonzola on cheese made in the United States. The argument is that the American-made cheeses are shadows of the original European varieties and cut into sales and identity of the European cheeses.

Auricchio, president of Wisconsin-based BelGioioso Cheese Inc., says he has no idea what he would call his Parmesan if he had to find a new name.

"I Can't Believe It's Not Parmesan," he jokes.

All American cheese should be labeled “processed cow stuff.”

“Europe starts food fight with U.S. over cheese names”

Hey...dip$hits! Pay attention, it’s called Russia, Ukraine, and Germany — There is stuff going there in case you hadn’t noticed, so take your goofy F’n cheese name debate and shove it up your obama.

I bought plastic cheese for years.

Now...real cheese and real butter is the only toasted cheese I make.

Not to fussy eaters. US dairy has a lot of antibiotics and growth hormones. The grains the cows eat might be Monsanto's finest. Europe is much stricter about what's in a food.

What's the harm with labeling a cheese "American-made parmesan", for instance? With US cheeses, manufacturers label when their chedder is made in Wisconsin or Vermont, for example.

American cheese is some type of processed cheddarish substance with its soul removed and each slice wrapped in its own little transparent shroud. I buy real cheddar (or Swiss or provolone...) rather than zombie cheese.
