Schumer to GOP: Obama will 'curtail' deportations without immigration deal

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Friday warned that Republicans would have to watch helplessly while President Obama curbs deportations, unless the GOP helps move a comprehensive immigration package in the House.

Schumer, one of the leaders of the Senate’s Gang of Eight that pushed through a comprehensive immigration package last year, said it is clear where the issue of immigration reform is heading. “They can either help pass comprehensive reform, which will greatly reduce the flow of illegal immigrants, grow our economy by bringing in needed workers in high-tech and agriculture areas, and provide a hard-earned path to eventual citizenship for the 11 million in the shadows,” he said in a Facebook post, “or they can sit idly by and watch the President greatly curtail deportations while 11 million continue to live in limbo here in America.”

The comments came a day after President Obama directed the Department of Homeland Security to find a way to enforce deportation laws more humanely.

Schumer said the choice is clear.

“A reform bill has the support of liberals, moderates, and conservatives and all we need is the courage of the Republican leadership to make the right and obvious choice,” he said.

Obama made his direction after a meeting with leaders of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

Immigration advocates and some Democrats, in particular Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.), have been pressing the administration to use its power to slow the rate of deportations, which have reached nearly 2 million during his administration.

“The president emphasized his deep concern about the pain too many families feel from the separation that comes from our broken immigration system,” the White House said in a readout after the meeting Thursday.

We already know it will be by bits and pieces and Obama already said he is okay with that....(and he'll blame the shortage on the Repubs.

Scummee is just the voice of a boot licker gone wild.

Give me what I want or I will stop enforcing the law I have sworn to uphold.

This is as impeachable an offense as has ever been committed by a president of the United States.

““The president emphasized his deep concern about the pain too many families feel from the separation that comes from our broken immigration system,” the White House said in a readout after the meeting Thursday.

But Obama doesn’t give a rats behind about all the other family separations that occur when other felons are convicted and carted off to prison.

Only in liberal land are illegal aliens a protected class.

You know how Obama claims to have “deported” more people than anyone else? Like good statist liberals, it’s because they changed the definition of deported to fit their needs.

Deported NOW includes anyone “turned away at the border”. They don’t have to be in the country, get caught and sent home to be considered deported. Oh no. All they have to do now is be turned away before ever entering the country. That gets counted as a deportation.

We are careening towards a hideously ugly crisis, however one describes it. For a Senator to openly advocate this sort of blackmail--where the President refuses to enforce the Law as a bargaining chip, in this manner--telegraphs loud & clear their total contempt for American values & institutions! There does not appear to be much--or any--room for a "nice guy" response.

Honestly, although infuriating, I don’t care.

1) Our economy sucks, so illegal immigration is way down anyway.

2) No immigration deal means that the Republicans can’t help Democrats turn millions of illegal immigrants into Democrat voters.

So, fine. You’re time is short upChuck and you won’t ever get the millions of new Democrats your hoping for.

The conservatives should then run ads exposing how Obama is “blackmailing the American people” by refusing to deport “job stealing, welfare consuming illegal aliens.”
