Talks between U.S. Secretary of State John F. Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov over the crisis in Ukraine reached an apparent impasse Friday, with Lavrov indicating afterward that the two had reached no common vision and Kerry saying that Moscow is determined to let a Crimean secession vote go ahead.
Kerry told reporters that after six hours of talks with Lavrov, the foreign minister made it clear that President [Vladimir] Putin is not prepared to make any decision regarding Ukraine until after the referendum on Sunday. He referred to a Crimean vote on independence, which Crimean officials have said would be a prelude to joining the Russian Federation.
Kerry warned that there will be consequences if Russia does not find a way to change course. And he said there would be an even greater response if Russia were to threaten the Ukrainian people, such as by sending forces into eastern Ukraine.

LOL are you kidding Russia saying after the vote they are going into East Ukraine
I be shocked!!!
Kerry threatens to open up a whole case of Whoop-Ass on Putin?
I would laugh if it wasn't so tragic.
Does anyone think that Putin is scared of “bashful, but likeable” O’bummer?
He will do whatever he wants, without any recriminations.
Someone get this clown Kerry away from the negotiating table. Nothing good can come of this. The neighbourhood bully says he’s going to steal half of your property, the police intervene and coerce you into agreeing to give up only 50% all in the name of “keeping the peace”. What is a clearly illegal act becomes legal because of cowardice and connivance. The Poles and Czechs have both experienced western duplicity and it looks as though the Ukraine is next in line to be sacrificed. Too bad for them they’re not muslim - that’s the only thing that would get Obama to do something substantive.

threaten him with another Chechyna, this time in the Ukraine and Crimea. He might be getting himself into a very expensive, decade long civil-war where Russian troops are killed daily by IED’s and sniper attacks. Putin’s own reign probably would not survive such a trial. This is what he fears most.
Not Obama’s magic teleprompter, not Merkel, not a few NATO planes in Poland.
Actually any punishment of Putin by the West (sanctions, blocade whatever) is in the best inerests of China since it would only push Russia with all its vast resoureses (natural, human, scientific, military you name it) into Chinese arms...
Moltov and Ribbentrop had a more cordial relationship. In the end, Ribbentrop got to dance the Tyburn Jig.
That would be the only way to do it, or if Ukraine still has nukes and draws a ‘real’ redline on their eastern border.
And the Chinese are really hurting economy wise now, so any chance of improving via increased trade with Russia would be welcomed, IMO.
This country is being run by maroons.
Want to stop Putin?
Elect a different leader!
And to clarify, I mean right here in the USSA
