Israel is the best country in the Middle East for women’s rights and freedoms, the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap survey concluded this week.

The survey, which has been conducted since 2006, ranks 110 countries in terms of gender equality and inequality, using a variety of factors including demographic data, socioeconomic figures, and a close look at women in the legal system. […]

Thomson-Reuters noted recently that several Middle Eastern countries—Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and others— have a poor track record for violence against women, reproductive rights, as well as the treatment and role of women. Egypt bottomed out the list. …

Are you counting the women not even allowed to ride the same buses as some ultra-orthodox men?

Israel has some stupidity (personally, I think men who don't want to ride the same bus as a woman should learn to walk), but it's not anywhere close to the same league as their neighbors.

I just hate seeing people break their arms when patting themselves on the back.

After spending 3 months in Israel in ‘97, the only time I saw anything like this was at the Western Wall.
Men and Women were told to pray in different locations.
Yea it sounded stupid but not anymore than some of the rules in Christian religions.

I would theorize its the only good place in the Mideast for women.

I’m neither Jewish nor Israeli, but I am happy to pat them on the back. They have created a fine society!

I will, however, continue praying for God to preserve and protect their country, just as I will pray for Him to protect the United States (in our case against all enemies, foreign and domestic).

In light of the surrounding countries’ view of women, this would be like winning a race against a field of paralytics.

Another “well, duh” announcement from our friends at the World Economic Forum...

...surrounded by countries in which women have a significantly lower status than the men who own them.

...and the donkeys the men who own them own.

Well, Israel is certainly the best country in the middle east for a woman if she’s looking to kill her unborn child. Maybe some of the folks yelping their approval on this thread should look into how the “World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Survey” defines “women’s rights”.

I have to laugh at the title because my first thought was, "DUH!" I suppose the same sentiment could be expressed with mice. "The enclosed live mouse trap is the safest place for a mouse in a room full of cats."

For simpletons trying to understand the comparison, in predominantly Muslim countries, women = mice.

Given its competition, it’s hardly a surprise to me.

I don’t need to do that. I saw them in person when I was in Israel three years ago. They all looked so young, at first in my jet-lagged state, I thought they were girl scouts.

If you are hanging your objection to the support of Israel on this thread based on abortion or even the “World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Survey”, you're pointing out fly shit in a pig sty. Should we overlook honor killings, stoning for being raped, restrictions on being in public, or having genitals mutilated to prevent enjoyment of sex to find something against Israel's liberation of women? Should we consider the legalization of female education, voter rights, property rights or the general physical abuse allowed in nations when grading the "rights of women" across the Middle East? Or are you going to insinuate that Israel is less deserving of praise because they allow abortions?

If I have confused what you meant based on what you posted, I apologize in advance and request a clarification. Otherwise,.... "Really?"

I wonder if, how, or how much the calculations/ranking weigh Israel’s new law allowing taxpayer-funded abortion.

Don’t be so sure. Plenty of abortions happen in the “Muslim world”, way more than they’ll admit to and possibly way more than what goes on openly (sadly) in the liberal secular countries we all are aware of.

The survey’s based on the legal climate, not what happens behind closed doors.
