U.S. government to cede control of key Internet body

SAN FRANCISCO — The U.S. government is relinquishing its control of the Internet's address system in a shift that may raise questions about the future direction of online innovation and communications.

The decision announced Friday begins a long-planned transition affecting the stewardship of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN.

Although other countries have had a say in how the Internet is run, the U.S. government retained veto power over ICANN.

The Commerce Department hopes to end its ICANN oversight by the time its contract expires in September 2015.

Proposals for a new ICANN stewardship will be accepted beginning next week at a conference in Singapore.

We would miss all that comes from N. Korea though

Huge loss there, heh

Very HUGE. But i say that name with a heavy heart. I need to pray for them more. It reminds us of who evil men can be, and what false gods can do.

If there was no God to restrain evil, while allowing man to disobey Him, then the whole world would be like N. Korea, worshiping the devil in the person of Kim Jung un.

Before the establishment of ICANN, the Government of the United States controlled the domain name system of the Internet.
The original mandate for ICANN came from the United States government, spanning the presidential administrations of both Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. On January 30, 1998, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce, issued for comment, "A Proposal to Improve the Technical Management of Internet Names and Addresses." The proposed rule making, or "Green Paper", was published in the Federal Register on February 20, 1998, providing opportunity for public comment. NTIA received more than 650 comments as of March 23, 1998, when the comment period closed.
The Green Paper proposed certain actions designed to privatize the management of Internet names and addresses in a manner that allows for the development of robust competition and facilitates global participation in Internet management. The Green Paper proposed for discussion a variety of issues relating to DNS management including private sector creation of a new not-for-profit corporation (the "new corporation") managed by a globally and functionally representative Board of Directors.[citation needed] ICANN was formed in response to this policy.[citation needed], and manages the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) under contract to the United States Department of Commerce (DOC) and pursuant to an agreement with the IETF.
ICANN was incorporated in California on September 30, 1998, with entrepreneur and philanthropist Esther Dyson as founding chairwoman.
It is qualified to do business in the District of Columbia.
ICANN was established in California due to the presence of Jon Postel, who was a founder of ICANN and was set to be its first CTO prior to his unexpected death. ICANN formerly operated from the same Marina del Rey building where Mr. Postel formerly worked, which is home to an office of the Information Sciences Institute at the University of Southern California. However, ICANN's headquarters is now located in the nearby Playa Vista section of Los Angeles.

This is like ceding ownership of the Panama Canal to an entity controlled by the PRC. It won’t be a problem until it is critical, and then we are brought our knees. China takes Taiwan and suddenly the U.S. Navy finds it is not permitted to transit the Canal. Apple annoys the world by suing Samsung in 100 countries and the domain name apple.com is transferred to an orchard in Brazil. Someday, we will pay dearly for these actions.

Yes. There will be consequences, part of which will be the type of solutions.

It looks like the US is letting oversight of ICANN go to no one in particular, and letting ICANN create the group that it will be accountable to,...

.....cant be a government or intergovernment body, so it has to make up the structure and composition.... ‘of someone....’ to be accountable to ?????

What will ICANN do to consider the rights of anyone as this process moves forward? Will there be sound accountability going forward? If there isn’t at least some government to which we can petition to address grievances, then to whom to we petition for redress, the so-called “stakeholders”? Who will define them?

CEO Fadi Chehade will get his wish:

....an opportunity to hand off control of the core of the Internet from the US government TO a 'variety' of involved stakeholders' from across the world.

I think what is important to focus on today is the trust in the global community that is displayed in the US' decision here," Chehadé told the press. "There is now full trust in the superiority of the multi-stakeholder model, the open model that enabled the Internet to be what it is today. That's the news today, really."

For his part, Crocker maintained that ICANN's transition out of US hands was a long time coming, and that today's announcement didn't have anything to do with Snowden.

So whoever then has the most invested gets the say?

Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) in a statement. ...

“It is also consistent with other efforts the US and our allies are making to promote a free and open Internet, and to preserve and advance the current multi-stakeholder model of “global Internet governance”.”

That is so chilling!

The primary thoughts that come to mind are “Taxes”, “Redistribution”, and “Censor”.

Anyone who didn't see this coming wasn't paying attention.

No matter, if it must die, then so be it. Something better will replace it that more than likely will not be controlled by any government. Bureaucratic control will only spur the desire for a free market type solution, IMO.

Naive, denying the reality of the Fall, as liberal minds basically do.

Only Al Gore can make that decision since he invented it.

Give him the chance and he'll sell it to Islamists.

“We have 18 months to find ‘new governance’ for a single Internet”, says ICANN CEO.

From the Silicon angle....Interesting as ICANN’S Ceo struggles with his own statements.....

Muslims already had their pants in a knot over ICANN....

“ICANN’s handling of the .Islam and .Halal applications is at once an egregious assault on the new gTLD program rules, and a betrayal of whatever trust Muslims around the world might have had in ICANN.”

http://www.circleid.com/posts/20140303_icann_boards_decision_on_islam_and_halal_tld_applications_wrong/

Posters comment:

The GAC is looking for applicants to resolve irresolvable conflicts and in avoiding any hint of conflict is effectively giving narrow interests veto power in a number of strings.... Asking for ‘global validation’ in an extremely broad group of strings is essentially asking applicants to be able to do what governments themselves cannot begin to do,.... agree on a global standard for any of a number of classes of string.

I got to say there are working at lightening speed and in so many various International Groups people have no clue about...all associated with various nations governance's...but they are not in the limelight...they hold constant meetings and determine what and when things will happen and to do.

Following just one of them, who they engage with, and what they discuss, would more than astound people if they knew! It's amazing to observe their involvement and actions.

It's like this huge gigantic maze of people (like worker ants) operating worldwide and connecting with each other...under each Government's umbrella... All this to bring about nation changes, leadership changes, and resolving issues from various uprisings as they instigate them for their desired end.

Further these groups do NOT operate with the nation people's wills in mind...it's all about bringing every nation, it's resources etc. into this World Governance....and it's happening right now...not something to come...they are in full swing and have been much more so since Obamas election..because he's one of them and those in his administration he appoints. He gives no resistance and in fact in full cooperation.

I sincerely believe these people pushing all this do so to attain the positions, or close to the powers that this NWO will entail once it's announced it's in position.

A banker acquaintance told me it would take less than a week to get all worldwide banking under one roof of governance and they are currently doing so..which is why so much of our government money is sent oversees into the IMF and World Bank....not to mention our banks themselves. Most of it ‘laundered’ as something it isn't...helps for nations, doing for the poor. etc. when in fact it's slid right on through to the assigned destination.

None of these people are elected..they are appointed or given positions pending the organization/Government they serve....but the focus is always with the Global Agenda Push.

Unfortunately there are not many you can share these things with....our nation is in such denial and because they are so many disconnected from what's happening they think your off your rocker....which you can't blame them for the “theorist's” make it difficult for those who do have the facts.
