At this weekends state party convention at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport, a group of influential California Republicans has an odd request for delegates: help turn California blue.
Around the globe, blue is identified with conservative, free market parties, while red is identified with social democratic parties, points out Shawn Steel, a former chairman of the state party who now serves as its representative on the Republican National Committee. It is why conservative-leaning Democrats in Congress were called Blue Dogs. Everyone knew what it meant.
Steel is among a group of Republicans that have introduced a resolution calling for the California Republican Party to adopt blue as its official color in branding materials. The informal coalition of Republicans, Red No More says that its time to conform to proper historical and international standards for political ideology, correct a 14-year-old mistake by the mainstream media and, in the process, confront the idea of a hopelessly divided nation.
The group has some high-profile backers, including two members of Californias congressional delegation. Should the Republican Party choose its own principles and symbols, or should we let the national media do that for us? asked Rep. Doug La Malfa, R- Richvale, in an email to delegates. Well, the answer should be obvious.

Sort of. Blue is the color used for the Virgin Mary in western Christianity (typically Roman Catholic and protestant churches, which is what is common in the United States), while Red is the color used for the Virgin Mary in eastern Christianity (usually Orthodox Churches, and especially Chrisitans in eastern europe and the middle east):
Back on topic, kudos to Clintonfatigued for posting this. I find it amusing when freepers claim "we can't let the media define us!" then at the same time they claim we need to vote for so-and-so douchebag so we can have a "red state". Illinois is "redder" than ever thanks to RINOs, and Bruce Rauner will make Illinois as "red" as it gets. ;-)
Those are actually YELLOW dog Democrats (idiots in the south who blindly support RATs no matter what because "my daddy was a Democrat and his daddy was a Democrat and his daddy was a..." They are a dying breed, thankfully. (Although I think even few neo-confederates on this forum who despise Republicans and sing the praises of how great things were under RAT rule are closet yellow dog types)
Blue-dog Democrats are allegedly "conservative" RATs who claim they break ranks with their party over major issues. Of course, most of the "blue dog Democrats" around in the 21st century just claim to be "conservative" and "independent of my party" to get elected, and then vote for horrible socialist crap like Obamacare without blinking an eye.
The article is correct that the "blue vs. red" color scheme works the opposite of the way the media defined the colors in the United States. For example, the Canadian equivalent of the term "RINOs" are "Red Tories", because they're phony conservatives who support marxist legislation. "Blue Dog Democrat" is a pre-2000 example of the correct color terminology. Back in the 50s, if you claimed a Republican was "Red", everyone knew what it meant, and it was an allegation he was a closet leftist.
One oddly, Crook County Illinois has primary ballots colored by party, and the GOP has always been assigned yellow, why the RATs have always been assigned green (not suprisingly, there are 10X as many green ballots on election day thanks to the zombies in Chicago). The Green Party had "qualified" ballot access from 2008-2012, and I believe they used pink for them.
Yellow is the right color for the current GOP.
The mainstream media changed it from red to blue back in the 1980’s when the obvious correlation between Democratic and Marxism were reversed. The Left Wing MSM knows people hate Communism, and to push Communism, they slyly changed the association.
Like chips in Vegas, they’re chips, not money.
While you’re at it, take back the word “liberal”. In the rest of the world, it means almost exactly the opposite of what Americans have been led to believe it means.
Oh, and ask “progressives” what they mean by “progress”, and how they think they’re contributing to that. Progress towards what?
I don’t know that the color switch was a left-wing plot. As I recall, before 2000, the different networks assigned colors differently on Election Night. In the 80s and 90s at least, I believe ABC had GOP as red, NBC had it as blue, and I think CBS had GOP as blue but not sure.
What fixed GOP as red and Dems as blue was the map that USA Today had on its front page throughout the Bush-Gore post-Election Day mess. Well before the Supreme Court finally put an end to the recounts, people were already talking about “red states” and “blue states.”
But, yes, I agree that Dems should be red.
I was wrong. I thought it was the nefarious workings of the MSM, vexed that the "Progressives" kept getting tagged with the communist color, and we, the readers, let them get away with it.
But perhaps not.
Here's another take :
Ping!
About godammned time.
Finally SOMEBODY is telling the commie media to go jump in a lake with their labeling the right as RED
Always said the first action the GOP would take that would signal the battle was joined would be to adopt blue as their Color and to publicly state that the Democrats should use Commie RED
Of course the RNC still embraces red, check out the pathetic GOP.COM
GOP.COM looks absolutely Soviet with all the Red those glad handing country club sons of bitches have splashed on thrre
I like the idea and it is part of taking back the dialog. Taking back and controlling the dialog.
Instead of being kowtows to leftist totalitarian fascists.
who I don’t like, in case you didn’t know
Courtesy of the Voter News Service(sp?) -an MSM creation in the 2000 election.
LOL. They already turned CA blue.
2000 election. The Left had been red for over 100 years.
It would also match the visible light color spectrum as well. Red being on the exteme left of center, Yellow middle and Blue right.
Long post alert
Cali filing closed last week, I was looking it over. To remind, it’s an all-party primary and the top 2 candidates advance to November (even if one wins a majority).
Governor (Moonbeam Brown inc.):
The main GOP candidates are conservative State Assemblyman Tim Donnelly and chrome domed RINO former Assistant Treasury Secretary in charge of TARP, Neel Kashkari. Needless to say I endorse Donnelly.
http://www.electtimdonnelly.com/
Moonbeam’s only rat opponent is “Super Genius” Immigrant Mathematician Akinyemi Agbede
http://www.thenextgovernorofcalifornia2014.com/
Hilarious. His only platform seems to be “make America #1”. Why are you a rat then, Agbebe?
Also in the race Cindy Sheehan (Peace and Freedom Party).
LT Governor (Gavin Newsom inc.)
The most prominent Republican Challenger is Former State Party Chair Ron Nehring. He seems decent to me.
Sec of State (Open)
There are 2 GOP candidates. Only one appears to be serious, Pete Peterson. Peterson is head of a Think Tank called “California Common Sense”. Sounds like a RINO to me.
Controller (Open)
Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin is running as is some accountant who lost the 2010 primary for this office to Tony Strickland.
Treasurer (Open)
Term Limit Controller John Chiang (D) is playing musical chairs and running for this. His ONLY opponent is Green Ellen Brown. Disgusting to see the GOP run nobody. I endorse the Green over the rat.
AG (Kamala Harris inc.)
Former State Senator and Assemblyman Phil Wyman is running. He’s most famous for moving back and forth from LA County and Fresno when running for office over the decades. Lawyer John Haggerty is other Republican in the race. Neither appears to even have a website. Pathetic.
Also in the race Birther Queen Orly Taitz (Ind) and Libertarian Jonathan Jaech.
Insurance Commissioner (Dave Jones (D) Inc.)
State Sen. Ted Gaines is the only Republican. He is a conservative, I think. Only other candidate is communist Nathalie Hrizi running for the Peace and Freedom Party. She’s also affiliated with the Party of Socialism and Liberation (an avowed Marxist-Leninist party). She wants to abolish insurance companies. Too bad she won’t be on the November ballot to take votes from Jones.
Select Congressional Races
CD 3 (John Garamendi D)
43% Romney. Garamendi won in 2012 by 54-46 over Kim Vann. State Assemblyman Dan Logue is the only Republican running.
CD 7 (Freshman Rat Ami Bera)
Bera beat Dan Lungren by 51-49. Romney got 47%.
3 GOP candidates, 2012 Senate Nominee Elizabeth Emken, Former Rep. Doug Ose, and former Chief of Staff for Tom McClintock and Soviet refugee Igor Birman.
Birman sounds interesting, I want this seat back.
CD 9 (Jerry McNerney D)
McNerney won 54-46 in 2012 over Ricky Gill. Romney got only 40% in the district. 3 Republicans are running. Tony Amador , Steve Colangelo, and Karen Mathews Davis.
CD 10 (Jeff Denham R)
Obama narrowly won this district, 47% Romney. But Denham should be ok.
CD 16 (Jim Costa D)
Only 39% Romney, yet Costa ran behind Obama and only beat an Anglo (it’s a very Hispanic District) Republican by 11 points. 2 of the 4 Republicans have Spanish names including 2010 Candidate Johnny Tacherra.
CD 21 (Freshman David Valado R)
Valado won big even as the seat swing toward Obama (43.5% Romney, down from 46% McCain). The guy who’s *ss he kicked is running again as is another rat who may be stronger, former Senate Staffer for Feinstein and Stabmenow, Amanda Renteria. The rats are gunning for him but I think he’ll win.
CD 24 (Lois Craps D)
Craps beat RINO Davey Maldanado by 10 points in 2012, Romney got 43%. A boatload of Republicans are running.
CD 25 (Open R)
Romney only narrowly carried this district but it should not be at high risk. Buck McKeon is retiring, he won by 10 points in 2012. Tony Strickland, failed nominee in CD 26 last time is running as is State Sen. Steve Knight. One of them will probably face the same rat McKeon beat, Lee Rogers.
CD 26 (Freshman rat Julia Brownly)
She beat Strickland by about 3 points. Romney got 43%. State Assembly Jeff Gorell is running for the GOP. Obama RINO (was a literal RINO) Douglas Kimec is running as an indie.
CD 31 (Open R)
Gary Miller is retiring. He would have lost last time but he faced another Republican in November. Romney got only 40.6%. 4 rats and 2 Republicans are running. Our best hope is for the same thing to happen again. The stronger Republican is Former Congressional Staffer Lesli Gooch.
This is the GOP’s most vulnerable seat in the nation.
CD 33 (Open D)
Henry Waxman is retiring. Only 37% Romney. There was some interest here in backing the RINO who ran as an Indie last time and only lost by 53-47 to Waxman, but he decided not to run. Lots of rats are running, best chance is if 2 Republicans make it ahead of them. Deputy District Attorney and Army Jag Elan Carr and Bit Actor Patrick Kilpatrick (I know I’ve seen him in stuff) are 2 of the 3 Republicans. Carr looks like a decent candidate, too bad the district is so rat.
CD 36 (Freshman Rat Raul Ruix)
Ruiz beat Mary Bono-Hack by about 3 points. 47.5% Romney. One of our best shots at gain in Cali. State Assemblyman Brian Nestande and former State Sen Ray Haynes are the Republicans.
CD 45 (Open R)
John Campbell is retiring. 55% Romney. Should be safe. State Sen. Mimi Walters and Businessman Greg Raths are the Republicans
CD 52 (Freshman Rat Scott Peters)
45.7% Romney. Peters beat Brian Bilbray in a squeaker (aka he actually lost and fraud put him over the top)
Gay Rino Carl DeMaio is expected to face him in November.
2 other Republicans are running. Splitting the anti-DeMaio GOP vote probably ensures he advances.
The other 2 Republicans are Technology Consultant and Marine Vet Kirk Jorgensen and Physician Fred Simon.

I don’t know which is stronger or better.
I would be happy to win a couple house seats to offset the expected loss of Miller’s seat and win at least 1 measly statewide office.
Anyway, good for Steel, he is the most prominent person I’ve heard of who gives a damn about this. Even though he got the origin story of the “blue dog democrats” wrong.
This is “minor” of course comparatively speaking, but it’s part of controlling the political lexicon, which is major.
I will never call global warming fantasy “climate change” (unless it’s in quotes like that, to mock it), I will never use the the terms “same-sex marraige” or “marriage equality”, to even call it “gay marriage” instead of “queers playing house” is me being charitable.
I will never call Obamacare by it’s Orwellian official title “The affordable care act”. I will never call tax hikes “revenue enhancement”. I will never call abortion “a woman’s right to choose”. I will never call Obama “The President”.
And I’ll never consider blue the color of democrats and red the color of Republicans. Politically the color red is associated with socialist, “social democratic”, and communist parties, worldwide. The democrats obviously don’t want that association.
The solution is easy for FReeping purposes: refer to leftist areas as Red (capital R).
