Planned changes to the Republican Party's presidential selection process are part of a rebuilding process that will strengthen the GOP brand and hopefully make its presidential nominee more competitive in 2016, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus told California Republicans on Friday, calling the GOP's current primary process "a complete disaster."

So the GOP is going to stop selling out to the moderates?

The GOP is going to advocate for American jobs?

The GOP is going to fight for America?

Or more of the same. Because that is the deal. Fix our country, or more of the same.

It is not complicated.

Those endless primary debates suck, and only give ammo to the Dems.

We're proposing to have fewer than 10, and this time around, we're going to pick the moderators

He really put himself out there with this statement - let's see what the excuses are when we still have Candy Crowley and the rest of the Praetorian Guard moderating the debates.

Priebus said shortening the primary process by moving up the national convention at which the nominee is typically selected to June and cutting the number of debates are "not an establishment takeover. This is using your brain. Everything's not a conspiracy."

Without some elaboration this sounds hysterical.

With less than half the debates of last time, and with the convention a couple months earlier, I’m not complaining.

Although even more drastic changes need to be made, I’ll see where this goes.

I was hoping by now Prince Reibus would have been fired. As much as I thought Michael Steele was a failure, Prince Reibus is far worse and not even a glimmer of conservatism running through his veins. At least Michael Steele was touted as conservative before he was head of RNC even though he became a laughing stock of going on tv shows and trying to be hip by getting jiggy wit it and using other played out 80s pop culture phrases to make him seem hip with the yutes.

“calling the GOP’s current primary process “a complete disaster.”

Two needed changes for presidential primaries:

1. Have the debates during the primary season only with conservative panels (and for the presidential general election debates, require at least half of the questioners on the panel be conservatives).

2. As another Freeper suggested recently, rotate the earliest primaries and caucuses, with the states having voted for the Republican candidate in the previous presidential election having a preference.

I’m really tired of New Hampshire and Iowa going first every year and having some resident of one of those states whining on TV that so-and-so candidates had coffee with us at our home four years ago to ask for our vote but this year we haven’t even had one candidate show up at our sewing bee pancake breakfast.

With Rinse Repeatus saying that this time we will pick the moderators, that makes you wonder why the hell you didn’t do that in 2008-2012 etc. It took you 6 years to figure this out? What were you thinking back then, that Dems played fair? With incompetence like that at the supposed head of the RNC, it is no wonder we lose.

"I think a traveling circus of debates is insanity in this party," Priebus told about 200 delegates. "We're proposing to have fewer than 10, and this time around, we're going to pick the moderators."

Though Priebus is at best a weasel, he is right about the debate schedule...

27 debates are WAY too many...people and candidates get burned out and it gives the dims lots of political ammo...

Picking out own moderators is simply a no brainer...one would think that decision should have been two POTUS election cycles ago...

They aren't called the stupid party for nothing...

Can someone please tell me...
“Who” is it that determines if a primary is “open” or “closed”?
Is it the state legislature, or the state party, or who?

Thanks in advance.

Allow me translate.

“We will fix the process to eliminate any but our chosen at the earliest opportunity so that our edicts will go unchallenged.

“We will select moderators that help us further smear conservatives by the wording of their questions. We are looking at Bill O’reily at the moment. Note this for later.

“We are changing all these details because our corporate donord demand that we liberalize and so our changes will reflect diversity including abortion, homosexuality, reperations and open borders. No, we won’t just dump it on you, don’t worry. We will continue doing exactly what we have been all along, changing not a damn thing, telling you it’s new and watching in hysterical laughter as you do our dirty work and attack any who aren’t complete useful idiots.”

Thanks,
Your pals at the GOP

How about “renegade” John McCane?

How about “Romneycare” “Mitt” Romney?

Duh.

Well, remembering that in 2000 Rove and a lot of other establishment Republicans were trying to clear the field for Bush, I think the measures Preibus is proposing could certainly help the establishment. An establishment candidate who can raise a lot of money early can already run over lesser funded conservative/base candidates. Shortening the primary season and cutting the number of debates could accentuate that establishment advantage.

Could be a conspiracy.

Iowa has only a non-binding straw poll, not a primary. At caucuses, local party officials are selected, and delegates to county conventions are selected. Those delegates are not bound to a candidate.

In 2012, for example, Santorum narrowly defeated Romney in the straw poll. Ron Paul backers ended up controlling the state party and got the majority of national convention delegates, who ended up backing Romney anyway as a nod to party unity.

It’s solid strategy. Trouble is they are doing this to beat conservatives, not dems. Notice they say exactly nothing about abandoning the Romney “Stand there and never press an advantage” mentality that they display every single day of the year in the house/senate.

I would think it’s the state legislation since either state political party could be in charge at any given time and the rules would change all the time...

Many states put that question on the ballot for the citizens to decide....

Because there are so many “independents” who are locked out of a primary vote...times are changing...

I know in Florida as an independent you have to declare which primary you plan to vote in and cannot vote in the other party primary

That leads to serious manipulation of the process....

If the dems don’t run a primary....all the independents can vote in the gop primary....which can really sku the vote up...

“Iowa has only a non-binding straw poll, not a primary. At caucuses, local party officials are selected, and delegates to county conventions are selected. Those delegates are not bound to a candidate.”

But doesn’t the party have rules that if you hold a primary before NH or a caucus before IA you lose delegates, thereby giving those two states a preference and protected status?

I’m a small “l” libertarian, and I think I’m being thrown under the conservative bus for lack of purity.

I’m not even a Reagan democrat. How in hell can the GOP (pronounced: gop) influence me to vote for them if I, a steadfast conservative, am held in comtempt, when Reagan won by the graces of independants?

We need a hard right turn, but it sure as hell won’t come about if we don’t bring along fellow travelers.

Because you have one job. Vote GOP as you are told by the party and their hundreds of little ass kissers that run around internet forums screaming “LESSER EVIL! and NO MATTER WHAT!

Then you are to sit down, shut up and await your next call to assist (with vote and public vocal praise) their next warp 9 lurch leftward.

Seems pretty clear to me. I mean they have bees screaming exactly that for years now.

Oh...forgot projection. They also project the need for purity, unless it is the wrong kind in their opinion. Then you get pics of Yosmitie Sam on a Dragon and told purity is the root of Dem victory cuZ they know better.

Hey, don’t look at me. This is their strategy to hold the base, not mine ;)

I agree but any state with an open primary should be eliminated from the process until late in the game. NH is MAss-lite and the Iowa “caucus” is just as useless IMO. They are too easily manipulated.

That seems correct.

Allowing a few small states to “go first” gives an opportunity for less well-funded candidates to be heard. Do we really want a system where a candidate needs $20 million dollars before the first primary vote is cast? Talk about a GOP-E wet dream!

Iowa is allowed to have early caucuses precisely because they are not binding.

I assume every state has caucuses. How else do precincts select chairs and start building platform planks? Can’t do that with a primary.

Caucus costs are paid for by political parties. Primaries put taxpayers on the hook
