A 31-year-old Calumet Park woman has been charged with murder in connection with a police chase early Friday morning that killed an off-duty Chicago police officer, authorities said.

Shanell Terrell, of the 12300 block of South Throop Street, is expected to appear in bond court Sunday on charges of first-degree murder and possession of cannabis, Cook County State’s Attorney spokeswoman Sally Daly said Saturday evening.

Authorities said Terrell was behind the wheel of a white van and being pursued by a Calumet Park patrol officer when she plowed into Officer David Harris’ black Lexus shortly before 1 a.m. at the corner of 87th Street and South Lafayette Avenue.

In a statement Saturday night, Chicago Police Department Superintendent Garry McCarthy called the charges "a measure of justice for Officer Harris as well as his family, friends, and colleagues, though the pain of his loss makes the news bittersweet.

When someone dies while you are committing a felony, felony-murder kicks in.

It does in Illinois. It does not in Michigan. She is from Calumet, the officer from Chicago. Where was the crime?

Officer David Harris’ black Lexus Officer David Harris’ black Lexus

I wonder how old that Lexus was, if a police officer could afford it.

Really? Do you honestly think it possible that this is the first time someone using marijuana was ever involved in the death of a cop?

BTW, this is a family site with language standards. Just so you know

“When someone dies while you are committing a felony, felony-murder kicks in.”

In reading the article I don’t see where it involved her committing a felony.

Thank you for calling attention to the use of the F-bomb. It is becoming quite common everyday language, even here on FR.

Have you ever seen a case where drugs made a bad event better?

“Her felony was running from police.”

I can’t imagine that would be a felony...

A quick search found this. Pretty much anything except a slow speed chase becomes a felony.

“Any driver or operator of a motor vehicle who, having been given a visual or audible signal by a peace officer directing such driver or operator to bring his vehicle to a stop, willfully fails or refuses to obey such direction, increases his speed, extinguishes his lights, or otherwise flees or attempts to elude the officer. See 625 ILCS 5/11-204.”

Fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer becomes a felony on the third offense. The third offense is a Class 4 felony punishable by 1-3 years in the Department of Corrections and a fine of $25,000.

Fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer is also a felony where any of the following take place:

the defendant drives more than 20 mph over the speed limit
the defendant causes bodily injury
the defendant causes more than $300 in property damage
or the defendant disregards two or more official traffic control devices (e.g., stop light, stop sign, etc.)

I have a friend of mine who is in real estate. Makes a good living but nothing extravagant. Whenever she buys a car she always looks for a 4 or 5 year old Lexus, something originally owned by a Doctor or lawyer. Costs around 25K.

Cars still look and run good, well maintained but not terribly expensive.
