Skip to comments.Ice on Lake Michigan proving fatal to waterfowl
Posted on 03/16/2014 12:05:08 AM PDT by Libloather
Tens of thousands of diving ducks and other waterfowl spend their winters in the southwest part of Lake Michigan each year, said Douglas Stotz, conservation ecologist and ornithologist at the Field Museum. Most years, they fly from places like Canada and Alaska and spend their time here diving for mollusks and fish without major problems.
But then came Chicagos frigid winter, which as recently as last weekend had blanketed about 93 percent of Lake Michigan in ice.
Hundreds of waterfowl likely have died as a result, experts say, many more are near starvation and a winter storm the likes of which Chicago experienced Tuesday night could put even more at risk.

There outta be a law...
I hate what global warming is doing to those birds. s/
I understand your sarcasm but the true believers would whole heartedly and seriously agree with the statement sans the /S.
Too bad they didn’t keep flying south. Many birds fly extrordinary distances.
IOWs you don't really know and this whole thing is made up speculative whinging.
Yes, I can see what you mean. The global warming nuts might say the same thing, but which no sarcasm.
Global warming causes extensive snow and ice.
ObamaCare is a success even if the number who previously lacked insurance, signed up for ObamaCare, and paid for ObamaCare is less than the number who lost their insurance because of ObamaCare.
Even though Obama had 74% support when he took power five years ago, the majority opposition today is racist and not because of massive incompetence or socialist policies.
Those who oppose abortion, in which minority and female babies are disproportionately killed, are racists conducting a war on women.
The massive “Stimulus”, which has added $7T to our debt, is the reason the economy has only been far worse than the predictions for no stimulus; without “Stimulus” it would have been even worse.
If we just had more restrictive gun laws, criminals who want to conduct mass shootings in schools, movie theaters, and other gun-free zones wouldn’t use guns for their crimes. Presumably they would instigate mass pillow fights rather than break gun laws.
Freedom of speech is enhanced by speech codes.
“Freedom of religion” means “freedom of worship” and only applies for two hours each Sunday morning, not in the rest of our lives.
“...likely have died ...
IOWs you don’t really know and this whole thing is made up speculative whinging.”
Well, you can make a pretty good calculated guess on the part of the ornithologists, as Lake Michigan is indeed mostly frozen over, and if I were a bird and couldn’t find a lot of open water, and couldn’t easily fly off from ice, I’d probably be pretty hard up too, and hungry. This isn’t a joke for the birds, I’m sure.
Use logic here. Why might they be dying. Too much ice on the lake might be the most logical guess, now wouldn’t it. Even a layman should be able to figure that out. I live in Chicagoland and know the lake pretty well. It’s been almost all ice. This past winter has been a tough one on everyone, including the birds. If I have to see one more mound of ice, I’ll go stir crazy, more than I already am now. I WANT SPRING!
Too bad they didnt keep flying south. Many birds fly extrordinary distances.
True. Southern areas of Texas, as well as other Gulf Coast States, get annual migrations from Canada and the Northern US when the weather begins turning cold up there.
People do the same and that’s why they’re called ‘snow birds’.
Damn global warming. I wish all the liberal democrats and their supporters would stop breathing and stop expelling CO2.
First, let’s blame it on Bush and Sarah Palin. Once we have gotten that out of the way, I’d like to know if ballerina Mayor Emanuel went out to feed the dying ducks?
How many govt boats went out to break up the ice so that the ducks could search for food? If they did, did they also throw out feed for them (bread is cheap)?
Mother Nature isn’t always so nice, is she?
We need more coal-burning power plants or we are all doomed!
Cold Air on Maine Coast proving fatal to Harbor Seals!
Maple Trees in Vermont dying from Early Spring.....( yawn!)
The list goes on.
We have been hearing from these Chicken Little bastids for far too long. What a laugh!
Some years the mergansers show up at my place and some years they don’t. That’s because they follow the ice rather than just going somewhere rather than showing up and hoping there’s no ice.
The great lakes aren’t the only water in the area where the birds go. I’ve got geese here that stick to the open water of the river all winter.
You nailed it, Pollster1. It is truly amazing to review some key elements of liberal logic.
And to think, there are people out there who truly believe what you wrote. This is, as we all know, the result of the take-over of the educational establishment by the leftists.
If they fly south from the Great Lakes, they would then have to face a even greater menace, the hundreds of windmills around Remington Indiana, built SMACK in the middle of one of the largest migratory bird routes in North America.
But, that’s OK. They will die in the glorious name of Political Correctness, and Democrat Cronyism!
Global Warming seems to be ignoring North America the last few years.
If you like your diver ducks, you can keep your diver ducks.
But bald eagles flying into wind turbines is still okie dokie!
A few weeks ago flocks of robins arrived in southeast Minnesota on their normal schedule to find deep crusty snow and sub-zero temperatures. Those that survived soon left.
Polar bears will love life on the Great Lakes.
Is it safe to say you don’t want the birds to starve to death? How touching.
Republicans are stoopit ....
Let the starving and urban outdoorsmen eat the ducks problem solved./s
Life is never a joke for any animal. Not one minute of it. Ever.
Just observing the irony of campaigning for the forced starvation of cognitively disabled people, and then crying over the possibility of starving birds. SMH
Anyhow, have a happy St. Paddy's Day tomorrow.
I don’t like for anyone, even birds, to have to starve to death. During inclement weather, when foraging is difficult, I supply food and water for the birds. I’m also the primary caregiver to my husband, one of those cognitively disabled people that flaglady says should be starved and dehydrated to death for the offense of being a burden. So yeah, when I see her whining over the poor birdies, showing more concern for them than her fellow human beings, sometimes I can’t resist the urge to point out the hypocrisy.

Were you born nasty or was it an acquired taste?
It’s called natural population control!
Robins, Cardinals and other birds returned EARLY this year, in mid-February. We had about 20 inches of snow cover on the ground where I live, 30 miles SW of Chicago. There was no food for the birds. Not sure where they went, but they're no longer in my area.
We even have coyotes and now wolves coming into our area looking for food because the snowcover has kept their food (rabbits, mice, etc..) underground/under snow.
Bad year for water fowl. It’s happened before.
I’m in good company among all the people you call nasty for refusing to employ the Schiavo Protocol against innocent victims.
Choose your battlegrounds better, rather than on a thread about birds. Geez.
Poor birds. How touching.
This isnt a joke for the birds, Im sure......This is natural selection before your eyes. Birds find it easy to thrive most years in winter when they should be going south. Comes along a winter like this and those who got adjusted die off, thereby cleansing the gene pool back to closer what they were supposed to do. Doves around here are in the same predicament. They were hanging out year long and this winter can’t find food (except from those idiots who are throwing out food for the birds). Straightens the gene pool out, a little, to get rid the abberations.
