Tens of thousands of diving ducks and other waterfowl spend their winters in the southwest part of Lake Michigan each year, said Douglas Stotz, conservation ecologist and ornithologist at the Field Museum. Most years, they fly from places like Canada and Alaska and spend their time here diving for mollusks and fish without major problems.
But then came Chicago’s frigid winter, which as recently as last weekend had blanketed about 93 percent of Lake Michigan in ice.
Hundreds of waterfowl likely have died as a result, experts say, many more are near starvation and a winter storm — the likes of which Chicago experienced Tuesday night — could put even more at risk.

Well, you can make a pretty good calculated guess on the part of the ornithologists, as Lake Michigan is indeed mostly frozen over, and if I were a bird and couldn’t find a lot of open water, and couldn’t easily fly off from ice, I’d probably be pretty hard up too, and hungry. This isn’t a joke for the birds, I’m sure.
Use logic here. Why might they be dying. Too much ice on the lake might be the most logical guess, now wouldn’t it. Even a layman should be able to figure that out. I live in Chicagoland and know the lake pretty well. It’s been almost all ice. This past winter has been a tough one on everyone, including the birds. If I have to see one more mound of ice, I’ll go stir crazy, more than I already am now. I WANT SPRING!

True. Southern areas of Texas, as well as other Gulf Coast States, get annual migrations from Canada and the Northern US when the weather begins turning cold up there.
People do the same and that’s why they’re called ‘snow birds’.

First, let’s blame it on Bush and Sarah Palin. Once we have gotten that out of the way, I’d like to know if ballerina Mayor Emanuel went out to feed the dying ducks?
How many govt boats went out to break up the ice so that the ducks could search for food? If they did, did they also throw out feed for them (bread is cheap)?

We have been hearing from these Chicken Little bastids for far too long. What a laugh!
Some years the mergansers show up at my place and some years they don’t. That’s because they follow the ice rather than just going somewhere rather than showing up and hoping there’s no ice.
The great lakes aren’t the only water in the area where the birds go. I’ve got geese here that stick to the open water of the river all winter.

And to think, there are people out there who truly believe what you wrote. This is, as we all know, the result of the take-over of the educational establishment by the leftists.
If they fly south from the Great Lakes, they would then have to face a even greater menace, the hundreds of windmills around Remington Indiana, built SMACK in the middle of one of the largest migratory bird routes in North America.
But, that’s OK. They will die in the glorious name of Political Correctness, and Democrat Cronyism!
Global Warming seems to be ignoring North America the last few years.
