Sen. Rand Paul and Gov. Chris Christie placed first and second in a straw poll held during this weekend's Northeast Republican Leadership Conference, but Dr. Ben Carson may have stolen the show without being a candidate for anything. He emerged in third place with 11 per cent support, tied with Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and former Sen. Rick Santorum. Paul led them by less than four points, with 14.7 per cent support. Christie polled 13 per cent. A 'draft committee' intent on sparking Carson to run for the White House in 2016 raised more than $2.8 million in its first six months of existence. That's more than double what the 'Ready For Hillary' group raised in its initial half-year, even though Hillary Clinton's candidacy seems far more assured than Carson's.

Ben Carson emerges as sleeper threat in N.H. Republican Party event straw poll, as Rand Paul and Chris Christie lead the field
Straw polls at this point? Meaningless. Why do we let straw polls in NH and Iowa dictate our entire lives. When this country fails, it will be self inflicted wounds that do it ..evil on the liberal side and stupidity on the conservative side.
I could proudly pull a lever for Dr Carson in the general. No problem there.
I like Dr. Carson, but like Christie’s, his anti-gun stance is a deal breaker for me.
Letting those damned communists and potheads in Red Hampshire set the table for our Presidential candidates in an abomination. Puke.
Yep. I don’t demand much, but I do demand someone who is Pro 2A. I may sit it out if the Republican Establishment has not gotten a clue by now, after failed RINO’s Dole, McCain and Romney.
NO MORE RINO’s!
Carson’s version of the Constitution must have a zip code clause under the 2A. Really stupid words from a supposedly bright guy.
A good reminder of how vulnerable conservatives are to
1) splitting their vote for fringe candidates, and
2) climbing on the bandwagon of a minority Republican without any sort of voting record to show just how conservative they actually are. (Hello Colin, Condi, Allen “Pigford” West, and Herman McCain)
If Ben Carson is seriously interested in politics he should have run for congress this year, then governor—or at the very least taken on a senate race.
Hopefully we can elect Cruz, Palin or Walker and we won't have a problem either way.
Attacking Ben Carson Over Gun Control
March 10, 2014 by Daniel Greenfield
Lets get a few things out of the way first
1. Ben Carson isnt actually running for president. I think it would be premature for him to do so.
2. The 2nd Amendment is non-negotiable.
but Carson isnt some Republican official who is preparing to sell out the country. Hes a successful doctor who is taking on a role as a conservative commentator, but he comes from a background of having lived in dangerous cities like Detroit and Baltimore.
Instead of rushing to attack him, it might be better to understand where hes coming from and educate him.
The damning quote that is being circulated shows his confusion about the issue and his attempt to come to grips with it.
When asked by Glenn Beck if people should be allowed to own semi-automatic weapons, Dr. Benjamin Carson said: It depends on where you live. I think if you live in the midst of a lot of people, and Im afraid that that semi-automatic weapon is going to fall into the hands of a crazy person, I would rather you not have it. (Glenn Beck Show, March 1, 2013)
Carsons comments reflect his life experience. He respects the Bill of Rights, but he has trouble applying it to the everyday reality of a major city where shootings are commonplace. Its a problem that a lot of urban residents have.
A lot of city dwellers look up from a front page story about three people dead in a gang shooting and have trouble believing that the answer is less gun laws. That doesnt mean theyre right, but it does mean that they need to be educated. Most of the country still supports the 2nd Amendment, but support is notoriously weak in many cities.
African-Americans tend to support gun control in large numbers. This is an emotional attitude that comes from life experience. It has to be overcome with facts, but its hard to convince people who have lived a certain way that their life experience isnt valid.
Both of these are reasons to reach out to Carson. He doesnt appear to have his mind firmly made up and is still grappling with the issue. If he actually enters the race or becomes a vocal advocate for gun control, it might be another story, but at this point it would be better to show him why gun control doesnt work instead of denouncing him loudly for not taking the right position on an issue that he is clearly still uncertain about.
You dont win over allies when you yell at people who have good intentions, but arent fully on board. Theres a big difference between someone like Carson and Crist.
Urging Carson to run for president is premature. Treating him as if hes already in the race is also premature.
Carson understands the moral and legal principles, but hes hazier on the social functions. Its a challenge, but its the kind of challenge we need to meet if were going to win the war of ideas.
Why is the loser Rick Santorum running? Does he have a core base of sympathetic losers that believe this pretender is a viable candidate?
BTW...... the ticket is Perry/Carson or Walker /Carson.
Carson as VP will replace the Obamacare disaster. It might not need a brain surgeon to do the job, but if the best brain surgeon in the world volunteers, he should be given the job
I think he should run for Mayor of Detroit next time around. Its his hometown and he’s well enough liked there that they have schools named after him. Plus he would have no say about guns there.
Me too. If a politician is willing to trample on the 2A, they will be more than willing to trample on all the others.
The 2A is not supposed to “reflect your experience”. It is absolute. And if someone running for President does not understand this simple fact, they do not deserve to hold the office. Period. End of discussion.
Do not make excuses for what he said.
If he runs, he has my vote.
An explanation is hardly an “excuse”.
He is not running for office at this time, and until he runs, it is just his opinion.
Exactly, pro-2A and NO SHAMNESTY.
2014 will be fine it’s about an organic movement in off year elections.
I am just so hungry for a honest, smart, proud-to-be-an American leader. Is Dr. Carson up for the job of president? I don’t know but I believe I know his character and I trust him. Read his book America the Beautiful: Rediscovering What Made This Nation Great and it is inspiring. I want to be inspired again.
I doubt he will even run but I sure would love to see him in some leadership role in the party.
If he has your vote, then you have no standards. May as well vote for Christie or any other dem-lite RINO.
The (supposed) purpose of the Republican party is to provide an opposition party to dems. A gun grabber RINO is no different than a dem so what is the point of voting at all of there is not going to be any opposition?
I won’t vote for a gun control advocate, period.
1. Ben Carson isnt actually running for president. I think it would be premature for him to do so.
The reason we're talking about it is because, premature or not, he is polling better than Cruz and Palin in a NH poll. Now I like Dr. Carson. We agree on most issues. I hope President Cruz appoints him Surgeon General. But I will not equivocate on the 2nd Amendment, nor vote for someone who does.
I agree. His assertion that it might (might?) be OK to own an "assault weapon" if you live in a rural area but not if you live in a city echos an earlier time when certain people could expect their 14th and 15th amendment rights to be respected in some parts of the country but not in others.
Here at FR, if that advice were to be followed, the post count would probably drop by eighty percent.
The neverending search for someone who will preach to the choir with 100.00% consistency causes a lot of FRustration here. I'd take Carson for president in a nanosecond.
No search can be made by those that view life through a paper towel tube
I am amazed that people will overlook his stance on guns. They say, “trust me, he will be good on other issues”.
But if he cannot be trusted with something so basic as the 2A, exactly why should I trust his decision making on other issues?
You obviously don’t know much about Dr. Carson. We can argue about him once he declares his candidacy.
That and $4.75 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.
Isn’t 8 years of amateur hour in the Oval Office enough?
6 presidents never held public office before becoming president
1. George Washington
2. Herbert Hoover
3. Ulysus S. Grant
5. Dwight D. Eisenhower
6. Zachary Taylor
7. William Howard Taft
How can an intelligent person compare Obama to Dr. Ben Carson? Really???
Yep. All those fringe candidates tend to have narcissistic leanings, by which they love the attention, and many of them are in it for the cash as well. It’s long been a Democrat practice to get vote-splitters into a race where they can, and I’m convinced that at very least the GOPe, if not the Dems themselves, play that game with apt bribery for the GOP primaries.
I know enough from his simple zip code 2A theory that his judgement on more complex issues will already be called into question. “Shall not be infringed” means something......or are people now getting a pass if they get that ass backwards?
All generals or high-ranking cabinet secretaries.
Their views on the 2A are remarkably similar for one.
Stop defending the indefensible.
I read that Dr. Carson doesn’t support the Second Amendment. Is this true?
It's not hard at all. The presidency is not an entry level job. The country elected a man without experience and without knowing where he stood and look what happened? Now people want to do it again. It's Einstein's definition of insanity applied to presidential politics.
Amnesty and gun control are deal breakers for me.
Hoover was secretary of commerce under Harding and Coolidge. Coolidge once said all the advice he got from Hoover was bad; some speculate that “Silent Cal” may have joined his Democrat in-laws in voting for Al Smith.
Both Hoover and Taft had considerable political and international experience. Hoover was a cabinet secretary and had run relief aid to Europe post World War I. Taft had been Secretary of War and also governor of the Philippines and Cuba. Carson is a doctor.
Better check his stance on 2nd A before you make that decision. As a CCW permit holder I don’t like it.
I’m going Cruz or Mike Lee or a combo of the 2.
REMEMBER DO NOT DONATE A DIME TO ANY NATIONAL GOP GROUP, THEY USE YOUR MONEY TO PROP UP RINOS! THAT ARE NOW FIGHTING TO STAY IN OFFICE. GIVE DIRECT TO YOUR CANDIDATE OF CHOICE.
TN SEN LAMAR ALEXANDER RINO PROMISED IN HIS BOOK 2 TERMS AND OUT, NOW LOOKING FOR 3RD TERM. TN STATE REP JOE CARR CONSERVATIVE IS RUNNING AGAINST HIM. http://www.carrfortn.com/ SO HE HAS A RECORD YOU CAN CHECK. LAMAR IS A DISMAL 60% GPO, 40% VOTING WITH DEMS. HE VOTED TO STAB OUR MILITARY IN THE BACK.
TRICARE LIFE Retired Military over 65 are LOSING the right to their OWN PHARMACY, goes into to effect 4/14/2014! Next Month.
There is NO compromise on 2nd A or 1st A. Any law on them is UNCONSTITUTIONAL! WHAT PART OF SHALL NOT INFRINGE DO PEOPLE NOT UNDERSTAND!
FBI: More Club and Hammer Homicides Than Rifle
More guns less crime
WORST GENOCIDES IN HISTORY
Doctors kill 2,450% more Americans than all gun-related deaths combined
So now both the GOP and the Democrats are in the business of looking for heroes who can make a good speech and who will be overwhelmed by the complexity of running the Executive Branch as their first job in political administration.
Wow! You could not be more correct. Look at how they are talking about Cruz cuz of his written speeches. Even Conservatives can be stupid when dealing with reality and the Presidency.
He is not just a doctor.
If you are interested.
