I have done research on my family history going back 500 years and 16 seems to be a reasonable age. I seems that girls in those days dragged boys into the woods to get the Green dress. (Engagement Ring)

Are you serious? Where is this? Why would the little girls be in scanty western dress?
And we are not living in a world with a life expectancy of 45, and we do not lose so many females in childbirth. We do not prize illiteracy or plague, either. There is no reason to give our underage daughters to predatory men.
And maybe you will make the case that it is "natural" for a man to hanker after adolescent girls. Certainly we are seeing a lot of that in our culture which has so little impulse control.
BTW--none of my great-grandmothers, who for much of their lives did not have the vote, married before 18. But I did have one great-great-aunt who lost four children within a few weeks time to diphtheria. I don't really understand your point.

This picture was taken in the region called “Palestine” at a Mass Wedding. These are muslim men between the ages of 30 and 50-years-old, waiting to marry their “bride to be” ranging in age from 5 to 9-years-old.
The reason for the line being backed up, other than the fact that there are a lot of perverts in Palestine, was attributed to several of the brides needing a diaper change near the front of the line.
