Shirin Ebadi, a former Iranian judge who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003 but who now lives in the UK, believes that if she returned to Tehran “Iranian people would welcome me, but the intelligence services would come to arrest me with handcuffs.” Asked by EUobserver if Iran would hang her, she said: “I don’t know.”

Her statement, in Brussels last Thursday (13 March), shows how little she thinks Iran has changed despite the election of President Hassan Rohani, a moderate, and despite the warming up in EU-Iran ties. […]

According to the Abdorrahman Boroumand Foundation, an Iranian NGO, Iran has executed 198 people this year, 25 of them in March. If the trend continues, the death toll will surpass the figure (512) in 2012, the year before Rohani took office. …

All executions should be public. What are we hiding?

I would say, the Iranians should publicly execute the Council of Guardians, Ceaușescu-style, if they want to rejoin the civilized world.

That would leave the Revolutionary Guard as the biggest problem. Never mind all the other aspiring Supreme Leaders.

That would leave the Revolutionary Guard as the biggest problem.

Obviously, you would have to defeat the RG first in order to get the top leaders lined up and ready to mow down on modern, hi-def video.

Never mind all the other aspiring Supreme Leaders.

That could be a problem. But Romania is a better place today as a result of what happened Christmas Day 1989.

Iran should renounce Islam, chase the mullahs away, and change its name back to Persia.

Why was I positive the “Nobel winner” wasn’t named “Carter” or “Obama?”

If Iran wants to join my local Chamber of Commerce, they had better stop the executions. Yea, that will do it. /sarc/

They should follow Obama’s lead and just execute them with drones and with no pesky trials. < /sarc off >

What on Earth could possibly lead ANYONE to believe that Iran wants stronger ties with the West - or ANY political entity that doesn’t maintain allegiance to the mores of the Fifteenth Century?

I doubt that’s what the EU’s foreign policy is based on. They want to make friends with anyone allied with Russia (to compete with them) and who is against Israel. There’s also Iran’s oil, which the EU would want a piece of in order to circumvent their energy trade with Russia . . .
