SIMFEROPOL, March 17, 0:52 /ITAR-TASS/. Upon the processing of 50% ballots cast Sunday in a referendum on Crimea’s future, a total of 95.5% voters who had come to the polling stations said ‘yes’ to the reunification of their region with Russia, Mikhail Malyshev, a person in charge of the referendum commission at the Crimean legislature said.

Another 3.5% voters said ‘yes’ to Crimea’s continued stay within Ukraine. Invalidated ballots made up 1% of the total. Malyshev said that the data did not feature the results of voting in Sevastopol.

The ballots in Sunday’s referendum contained two questions: 1) Are you in favor of Crimea's reunification with Russia in the status of a constituent territory of the Russian Federation and 2) Are you in favor of restoring the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Crimea and its status of an integral part of Ukraine.

As many as 1,534,815 people of Crimea and 309,774 people in the city of Sevastopol had the right to vote in the referendum.

As many as 27 territorial election committees and 1,239 polling stations, including 192 polling stations in the city of Sevastopol were set up for the event.

The expenditures for the referendum were covered from the autonomy’s budget. Referendum’s organizational costs stood at 1.7 million U.S. dollars.

Sevastopol is still out - 95% approval with 50% of the vote in.

And heavily pro-Russia Sevastopol is yet to report in its votes.

According to the 2001 Ukrainian population census, 58% of the population of Crimea are ethnic Russians and 24% are ethnic Ukrainians.

As I stated from the start of all this. The terrorists that overthrew the Democratically elected government in Kiev did not have the support of the people.

The people of Crimea want nothing to do with the thugs who have taken control of Kiev.

According to international observers was in line with international norms.

24% of Tatars turned out and a majority of them apparently voted for union with Russia.

If this is also confirmed for Ukrainians, that pretty much upends Western assumptions about this being an only ethnic Russian vote.

Rather, its becoming clear a broad-cross section of Crimean society favors reunification with Russia. And the West and the rulers in Kiev whom no one by the way elected - are reduced to talking about a sham and illegality.

They should hear themselves. Their anti-Russia animus borders on the absurd.

“And of course no voter fraud.”

Probably less than the average Chicago election. Seriously, with no sarc.

Someone explain how this is a threat to the US. Someone explain how this is less legal or justified than Hawaii or Alaska statehood, or the votes Puerto Rico has had, or the entire Manifest Destiny for that matter. Someone explain Obama’s moral authority to not recognize this region’s act of self-determination.

If it had been 96%, I might have suspected some fraud. OTOH, 95.5% sounds about right.

Right, why should they want to be part of Ukraine anymore? They elect a President (Yanukovych) they like fair-and-square, only to have the western half of the country riot and essentially veto their vote.

The attempted overthrowers remind me of the occuparasite types. Leftist and immoral, wanting to align with the now morally corrupt west. Tyranny of the minority.

The people of Crimea want nothing to do with the thugs who have taken control of Kiev.

That's what it reads like to me. Soros nad Obunga have to be viewing this one almost like one of those elections in Wizard of Id where Rodney tells King Id he's at 95% and the king walks off thinking "Now all I gotta do is win over that 95%...

Also living in Texas these days...
