The states people are fleeing in 2014
Forbes via MSN ^ | February 13, 2014 | Susan Adams

Posted on 03/17/2014 11:30:33 AM PDT by rightwingintelligentsia

More people are moving out of New Jersey than are moving in. The same is true for Illinois and New York. Those three states top the "outbound" list compiled by United Van Lines, the big St. Louis-based moving company that has put together an annual survey of where Americans are moving for the last 37 years.

The company analyzed a total of 125,000 moves across the 48 continental states and the District of Columbia in 2013 and came up with a picture of migration patterns across the U.S.

According to Professor Michael Stoll, chair of the Department of Public Policy at the University of California Los Angeles and a consultant to United Van Lines who studies American migration, the moves reflect long-term shifts in the U.S. economy and the hit to employment in many states resulting from the slow recovery.

Of the top nine states where more people moved out than moved in, four are in the Northeast: In addition to New Jersey and New York, Connecticut (No. 5) and Massachusetts (No. 8) make the list. The list also reflects Americans’ desire to leave the frigid states in the north for warmer climes. "Over the last 20-30 years there has been a general shift of the population from the Midwest and Northeast to the South and West, which we think of as a move from the frost belt to the sun belt," Stoll says.

Liberals mess up a state then move to one the conservatives have kept right - then try to change it to the way “we did it back home.”

I noted that they include the idea of moving from colder climate to warmer climate as one of the factors. But I thought Man Made Global Warming/Climate Change would alleviate this factor by now.

When the Mrs. and I were married back in 1984, we got a great rate on a Ryder truck rental from her home in east Los Angeles County to my home in North Dakota because everyone was fleeing North Dakota in those days for warmer climates.

There was a severe shortage of trucks in North Dakota for people wanting to move out.

Funny how much things have changed since then . . .

They also bring annoying accents and off-putting, haughty attitudes.

Saw a funny acronym yesterday for Cary, NC:

Allied Van Lines = people with houses full of stuff. They don’t catch the guys coming or going with their possessions in the back seats of their cars. More of that sort may be arriving than leaving.

That is why you are seeing some states like Michigan, Wisconsin showing signs of Red and states like Virginia, North Carolina and others showing signs of Blue. People moving from one state to another change the political landscape. I think the reason people move from the North to the South is weather more than taxes. The Northern states tend to have older people and they end up wanting to retire down south.

Notice how they are the top taxed and most Anti-Gun states. I’m sure Mass, CA and CT aren’t far behind. We got out of NJ a few years ago into PA. It’s not Texas, but it’s light years better than NJ!

A few states on the moving-out list that mystify Stoll: West Virginia at No. 4 (60 percent more moved out) Utah at No. 6, (58 percent), and Kentucky at No. 7 (56 percent).

That's not a mystery. It's all the Liberals who moved to those states, couldn't understand why the welcome wagon wasn't rolled out for them, and moved back as soon as they could. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Thanks for posting this. My response is maybe a bit off topic, but I’m also interested in where people are GOING TO, and why.

I have maybe ten years to choose my retirement destination. I’m leaving Michigan, not for political reasons (we’re quite red right now), but I want warmer, more conservative, a longer biking season, etc. I have one FReeper suggestion of St. George, Utah and welcome others. I’m working on a criteria list but it’s not done yet.

When I lived in Flint, Mich. there was a LONG waiting list at Ryder for people who wanted trucks and trailers to move out.

And the outbound rate was about three or four times the inbound.

I like living in SFL. Little warm and tropical in the summer but as long as you have ac you’re good to go. Just stay indoors from July to Sept. The rest of the yr makes up for it. Plus shorts, flip-flops and tank-tops year round is comfy.

Yep, but moreover it doesn't factor for all the welfare bums moving into states.

A producer-taxpayer moving out is NOT offset by a looter (or two) moving in.

United Van Lines can help with that.

The top inbound states of 2013 were:
  1. Oregon
  2. South Carolina
  3. North Carolina
  4. District of Columbia
  5. South Dakota
  6. Nevada
  7. Texas
  8. Colorado

The top outbound states for 2013 were:

  1. New Jersey
  2. Illinois
  3. New York
  4. West Virginia
  5. Connecticut
  6. Utah
  7. Kentucky
  8. Massachusetts
  9. New Mexico

I note the outbound list matches Forbes's ... yep, from the article:

The way it worked was this... The New Yorkers moved west into NJ starting in the 1950s and really ramping up through the 1980s, when many of the the farms of rural Hunterdon county were transformed into raising McMansion.

Taxes went up and up and up and the people voting for these tax increases turned things bluer and bluer and bluer... (though, I will say that Hunterdon County is still red... give it 10 more years).

The outrageous property taxes drove the original familys across the Delaware river into PA, and the Democrats, having ruined the property tax situation in NJ began to follow into PA... most of the Lehigh Valley is House farms now and the same deal is going on that happened 30 years ago in NJ... the retirees from NJ are going south... some probably via PA.

I say if you are down there... invest in shops that sell “Old Man Hats”.... know what I mean? Those old geezers you see driving down the road 20MPH under the limit... they all wear Old Man Hats.

Saved this a while back, a neat visualization tool to see where people are coming from and going to in any county you want to pick, at least up to 2010:

Cool Map

We picked moving to an uber-liberal state, Hawaii, because we wanted to retire here eventually, and I have had a great time infuriating liberals here ever since. Drives them nuts to find out not everyone is in lockstep with liberal dogma.

Helps living on a small town type island. Honolulu sucked.

It looks more like it's rural people who can't find work -- at least in West Virginia and Kentucky. The part of West Virginia that people are actually moving into is the part nearest DC, and most of the people moving to Mr. Rockefeller's neighborhood are most likely liberals themselves.

Liberals want to export their failed policies from states like IL, NY and NJ to the ‘red’ states and are having quite a bit of success.

That way there will eventually be no reason for anyone to move south or west, other than the weather.

And soon even the weather won’t be a factor.

Thanks to Global Warming the Adirondack mountains will become ocean front property and we will be growing most of our citrus and tomatoes in the balmy states of Montana and North Dakota.

Ya, the article seems to think people are moving out because it is cold in those states. How about people moving out because the want freedom? Those states are the ones that more closely aligned with the fed government and are therefore more similar in political control. Don’t forget, Romney is from Mass.

It's really pretty there. But, as you point out, it is positively infested with libtards.

If I were moving, I'd probably pick Nevada, Texas, Colorado, or Washington (pretty, like Oregon, but without an income tax, despite the best efforts of Mr Bill's dad). Or one of the Dakotas, if I needed work.

It is not new for WV to lose population. Remember OB is determined to kill the coal industry,

We moved to soCal from WV in 59. I noticed in the 1960 census and think a couple of times thereafter WV lost population.

On trips home, I would ask where all the young men were, after seeing all the young women rocking babies on their porches. I was told out of state college or military and they don’t come back.
