Shooting Starts in Crimea as Putin Defends Annexation

Multiple outlets are reporting that Russian troops stormed a Ukrainian military base in Simferopol, Crimea today. At this point, Reuters is reporting one Ukrainian soldier was killed; this De Welt report says the soldier was wounded.

Troops stormed a Ukrainian base on the outskirts of Simferopol on Tuesday, according to a Ukrainian military spokesman.

One Ukrainian officer was reported to have been wounded in the neck. There was no immediate indication of who was behind the incident, although Kyiv soon afterwards said Russia was responsible for the attack.

Immediately after the incident, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk said the conflict had moved from a political to a military stage.

“Today, Russian soldiers began shooting at Ukrainian servicemen,” said Yatseniuk. “This is a war crime.”

The storming of the base in Simferopol comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered an address to his rubber-stamp parliament. In that address Putin called Crimea an integral part of Russia. Putin also accused Ukraine’s current leaders of being controlled by anti-Semitic radicals, and stated that Russia had no choice but to intervene in Crimea once Yanukovych was ousted. Putin’s address sets the stage for the annexation of Crimea, and lays down the logic by which he will eventually move into eastern Ukraine.

No surprise. Putin’s been wanting to kick some ass. He’s in a defacto alliance with Iran and will arm them with a nuke soon, too.

Reports conflict. Some say shot in neck, others say shoulder. Some say death, others say wounded. Some say sniper from another building, shooting at Ukrainian and Crimean forces at same time.

“said Yatseniuk. “This is a war crime.””

What a monkey! If you are not willing to call a uniformed Russian soldier shooting a uniformed Ukrainian soldier in a territory claimed by both counties a legitimate act of war, there are no legitimate acts of war. I served my time in the Army mostly during the cold war and I don’t like Russians much, but I like liars less.

bad news

They should have just surrounded the base and stood their ground, and let anyone leave UNARMED

Then the Ukranians would have had to fire the first shot.

IIRC, Crimeans had "X" hours to leave Crimea, stay and go home but give up their arms or join the Russian Army.

Just by numbers alone Ukrainian Nationalists were outnumbered 2 to 1 not even counting any Russian which came into Crimea.

How about a US president that is judge and jury empowered to take out Americans on foreign soil?

This is a point I have been trying to make. Let’s restore our own freedoms here before we worry about those in other countries. And why does no one care about Tibet but Crimea is the horror of the century?

Why? George Soros wanted to harvest Ukraine. Now he is unhappy.

Was Pearl Harbor a “war crime” when the Japanese bombed it?

Tibet offers nothing to the Powers that be...so there's no interest.... Unfortunately their religion and focus on “Being Happy’ rather than developing their people and country, left them uneducated and unfortunately unable to do more than menial work....if that. Many cannot read or write. They are dependent on India as a welfare group...and those under China's rule are fast becoming extinct.

There is "little Tibet" they could go to if they wanted to really be independent....but the youth prefer the cities because they have no interest in being farmers, as they exist as that in "Little Tibet" for the most part.

They will never have a country again...even the Dali Lama has stated that and has stepped down from being a political leader.

Didn't President Clinton promise Crimea that the United States would defend them militarily if they promised to give up their nukes? Well, they gave up their nukes, and we've not defended them now Russia has Crimea.

Obama should've sent military assets to Crimea 3 months ago. Obama is the most negligent president in U.S. history, but then again he is probably in support of the expansion of Communism and is faking his outrage. No sanctions on Putin speaks volumes.

Russian reset, backing the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, bombing Libya leaving it to descend into chaos and Benghazi, secret negotiations between a woman born in Iran (Valerie Jarrett) and Iran which can only result in Iran getting nukes, trashing Israel, now failing to defend Crimea.. What a train wreck!

It was reported very early on when Russian troops first began taking over the bases, that Ukrainian troops were given opportunity to lay down their arms and go home if they weren’t interested in joining the Russian Military. Most refused.

No, it’s Russian soldiers and everybody knows it. The kenyan and merkel don’t want to escalate the situation by directly accusing Russia. These are war crimes and there is a process for that.

One thing I will say for Tibetans. They did not try to play McCain and others into supporting them.

I am so tired of eager puppets these days.

Can we not get a decent leadership in place here before we worry about Putin?
