All Navy, except for Eisenhower and Reagan, who were Army.

You are likely correct, ...by research.

Soviet subversion and infiltration efforts against the US were massive, and the KGB kept reasonably good records.

Although Putin himself did not oversee Communist sympathizers of the Dunham's era, he was aware of the programs and, when he gained the Presidency, had access to those records. He is smart enough to research every American he has to deal with. When Obama ran for US Senate, Putin surely found and read his file, ....and was pleased.
