Principal who told kids not to speak Spanish will lose job

HEMPSTEAD - The Hempstead school board won't renew the contract of a principal who instructed her students not to speak Spanish, in a rapidly-evolving district where more than half of the students, like many Texas schools, are now Hispanic.

Hempstead Middle School Principal Amy Lacey was placed on paid administrative leave in December after reportedly announcing, via intercom, that students were not to speak Spanish on the school's campus. The Hispanic population of the rural area, roughly 50 miles northwest of Houston, is growing quickly, and Latino advocates say that it's important to allow Spanish in public schools.

"When you start banning aspects of ethnicity or cultural identity," says Augustin Pinedo, director of the League of United Latin American Citizens Region 18, "it sends the message that the child is not wanted: 'We don't want your color. We don't want your kind.' They then tend to drop out early."

Such fast growth is pervasive in Texas, says Steve Murdock, a professor at Rice University and director of the Hobby Center for the Study of Texas. Half of all Texas public-school students are now Hispanic, he notes. "When you look at issues related to education in Texas, to a great extent, you're looking at the education of Hispanic children."

Similar growth patterns, he says, hold true for the rest of the United States: "It's not just Texas."

Civil rights advocates say Lacey's suspension may have set off a campaign to intimidate Hispanics, including the district's superintendent, Delma Flores-Smith. They are calling for the Department of Justice and the FBI to investigate possible civil rights violations. An FBI spokesman would not confirm an investigation.

“it sends the message that the child is not wanted:”

...uh, no. What it does is send the message that unless you want to spend your life picking apples, you should lean English. It also alerts the little bastard that he’s in America. Assimilate.

Texas will be a blue state soon. Demographics are destiny.

You bet it will...From the schools to media to government, they're indoctrinating the kiddies from 1st grade on....They're working on generation #3.

No joke

Sadly, the U.S. citizen Hispanic voters who will flip Texas to Democrat Blue are already in place, They’re just not old enough to vote yet.

I've been to Texas, yes...The illegals are taking the entire state, just like the rest of the southwest and other regions.

For those who are able to admit the truth, this is certainly no secret.

So, I can’t count on Texas when I am ready to bail on NY? Good to know.

I gots a question. When the automated phone Nazi says "press 1 for English...2 for Spanish".....How does the non English speaking person know what's being said?

And a follow up. Why do drive up ATM's have Braille?

Prior to this epic government sponsored illegal invasion, can anyone imagine this happening 60 years ago in the once united and proud America?

Government aids and abets this illegal invasion of tens of millions and then forces the legitimate citizens to subsidize their own demise..

Life has changed since the first, hard working, Spanis speaking Cubans moved here. We have friends who came here as children and their PARENTS only allowed them to speak English since they were now in the US.

Life has changed?

That’s an understatement and a clear sign of surrender.

Now schools in Texas are firing teachers who want the kiddies to speak English?

And this is the red state?

The principal would do us all a favor by calling ICE to deport half the student body along with their thousands of relatives back where they belong. It’d save on tax dollars and raise the lowest common denominator.

True story. I knew a guy from Belmar NJ who was legally blind. He won 5 million in the lottery. First thing he did was go out and buy a car.

The principal was trying to prevent them from ending up as losers. English is the language of business and commerce. Chinese, Japanese and Korean children are being taught English. Indians, Russians, and Europeans are taught English for the same reason.

That sounds great and all, but it’s not what’s happening in this Texas school...

Just the opposite....Their getting rid of the person who had the guts to speak out....

In a sane country, this would be considered wrong and criminal.

Your comments fit with my experience when a youth. My immediate family including aunts and uncles and so on were immigrants who in family gatherings always spoke in Russian. My brother and I most usually were outside enjoying the USA pastimes for boys and to avoid the ‘noise’ of the old folks. My mother always insisted we speak English as being taught to us in a German rooted private school. I had plenty of opportunities to learn to speak Russian but was most often playing with boys of many different language families. We were kind of following the adage ‘that when in the USA public speak English(of your cultural kind)and in your home speak the language of choice). I during my many tears have wished I had taken the opportunity as a youth to learn at least to speak the Russian language.

Texas has a different history, but when the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed, those who kept their land and stayed in what would now be the United States of America, agreed to forsake their culture and assimilate. Language was part of that assimilation. They did. The agenda of the new comers from our southern borders is intentional segregation by language. Our government facilitated it with setting up methods to avoid assimilation, voting, driver license test, dual language phone messages, etc. Chickens have come home to roost. So dangerous.
