Did 'fracking' play role in L.A. earthquake? Councilmen want to know
Los Angeles Times ^ | 03/19/2014 | Emily Alpert Reyes

Three Los Angeles City Council members want city, state and federal groups to look into whether hydraulic fracturing and other forms of oil and gas “well stimulation” played any role in the earthquake that rattled the city early Monday morning.

The motion, presented Tuesday by Councilmen Paul Koretz and Mike Bonin and seconded by Councilman Bernard Parks, asks for city departments to team up with the California Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources, the U.S. Geological Survey and the South Coast Air Quality Management District to report back on the likelihood that such activities contributed to the 4.4-magnitude quake.

Earlier this year, the council voted to draft rules that would bar hydraulic fracturing, often referred to as “fracking,” acidizing and other kinds of well stimulation in Los Angeles until council members felt sure that Angelenos and the water they drink were safe from their effects. The risk of triggering earthquakes was among the dangers cited by Bonin and Koretz, who championed the move.

“All high-pressure fracking and injection creates ‘seismic events,’” the motion states. It added, “Active oil extraction activities are reportedly taking place on the Veteran’s Administration grounds in West Los Angeles, nearby the epicenter” of the Monday quake.

"It is crucial to the health and safety of the City's residents to understand the seismic impacts of oil and gas extraction activities in the City," the motion said. Environmental activists have pointed to swarms of earthquakes in Oklahoma, Arkansas and Ohio as evidence of the risk. Oil and gas companies counter that fracking and other technologies used to coax oil and gas from wells are safe, and have opposed the push to ban the methods inside L.A. city limits.

Evil carbon strikes again.

I read in the Society of Automotive Engrs magazine today that California legislators feel that fuel costs are remaining too low to effectively limit personal driving so they will need to impose a significant carbon tax on motor fuels.

I heard this last night watching our local news and just busted out laughing..an earthquake happens and THIS is what they actually believe..freaks of nature

Sadly, and I say this with the utmost sincerity, there are an awful lot of people in the unwashed masses of southern California that will believe this crap and will make it a part of their Starbucks/Bong discussions today. After which they will recharge their Obamaphones and stop by the welfare office for a visit.

LOL.
It MUST be the fracking and not the active fault nearby.
There cannot be any other explanation!

Just a note, none of the counsel have any experience in oil and gas.

Also I have worked with the DOG (Division of Oil/Gas) out here and they tend to know less then the counsel.

Had a well inspection by the DOG ones, the guy showed up and had no idea where the sump on the pump was.

There were never any earthquakes in Cali til now (/s).

Looks like "Fracking's fault" is the replacement for "Bush's fault"?

Of course they will, unfortunately LA is filled with liberal loons..you take out LA County and NoCal and its pretty much a Conservative state. With libs, they use EVERYTHING for their agenda, a quake, WOW its from fracking, here’s an idea, a quake happened because its California and we get quakes here, its part of life

Maybe that massive bird burner they have in CA for solar energy caused the quake.

Why stop with fracking. They should expand their investigation to include leprechauns, unicorns, black holes, the devil’s triangle, and global warming.

Even more sadly, it is likely the "well-educated" of CA will believe it even more than the unwashed, since it ties in with their ideological beliefs.

Well if it did, then they should stop all fracking in California.

After all, the small quakes relieve pressure and they’re hoping for the really, really big one to cash in on...

They might want to look into the possibility of Big Foot causing them as well. Who knows? What with all the stomping around he does with those big feet, it *could* cause quite a disturbance in the Earth's crust.

They might also look into the possibility that CA might capsize due to all this potential phenomena, along the lines of prior Dem brain trust concerns about Guam.

Cranial fracking occurs when progressive ideas pierce the skull. They create seismic activity in the brain not unlike that which occurs between the continental plates. We see the results in a variety of attitudes, actions and plans promulgated by one so afflicted.
The best way to discern a fracked brain is to look for arrogance, rage and dogmatism in support of utter nonsense.
Oh, yes, and one more vivid characteristic. These victims of progressive fracking ALWAYS accuse others of their own disease.
An important element of ObamaCare under a patriotic administration will be to provide mandatory mental health services for brain damaged progressives. In fact, this will be the only positive legacy of the program and its sole reason for keeping it.
