The Kansas City Zoo will again review its policies after a frightening spasm of violence Tuesday afternoon that included shots fired in the parking lot.
There were no reported gunshot injuries, but zoo officials want to avoid having the animal park gain a reputation for being unsafe on days when it is open for free to residents of Jackson and Clay counties.
Tuesdays disturbances followed another incident on a free day last April when a police officer breaking up a fight in the parking lot got a bloody nose. In both cases, the free admission drew crowds that were too big for the zoo to handle.
Im always concerned about how people feel about the zoo, zoo director Randy Wisthoff said shortly after Tuesdays incident. Thats always at the top of my plate, that people feel safe here.
Several witnesses on Tuesday described a chaotic scene of brawls and gunshots.
Kristi Sharp Patterson, who was at the zoo Tuesday with her children, said that as they were leaving, she saw people on the ground in handcuffs, and crowds were gathering around.
Next thing you know shots were fired in the parking lot right in front of the zoo and everyone started screaming and running in every direction, Patterson told The Star. By far the scariest experience ever.

What’s the over/under on banned comments on this one?
Not all the savages have beards.
Facts are racist
More “teens”. If you go to KSHB41’s website you can see the cellphone video of this. Pure blackout.
Many are waiting for the KC councilman to run to the mic and call this racism like he did over the country club plaza incidents recently.
The police do not arrest you for checkers. They arrest you when you are starting a riot with your pants around your knees.
When will we be able to have an honest discussion about race in this country?
Amish gone wild yet again.
If Baraq had a son, he’d be gettin’ a freebie to the zoo....
Plantation slavery - Worst. Idea. Ever.
New marketing campaign: Come to the KC Zoo! Now the animals are outside the cages!
They should give out tickets on free days. Give or mail them out more than a week in advance. Either use tickets or keep the numbers down, have a numbered sign posted with the amount of people admitted thus far. Or, just revoke the tax and give people that 1/8th of a cent back in their pockets.
“....and dey all axed for you.”
Does anyone not know who to avoid?
Can you really blame them.
Truer words have never been said.
There's no over/under for comments at the newspaper. They aren't allowing any on the article. (What a surprise.)
